Turkeys and Coyotes

My friend and I were turkey hunting on opener last monday, he was the shooter, i was just calling, as we got to our spot, toms were gobbling all around us, and as i started to call, a rooster pheasent cackled about 100 yards from us on the treeline. As we watched the rooster, all of the sudden a coyote came out of nowwhere and chased it into a tree. My friend told me to call him with the diaphram call i was using for the turkeys and when i did, he seemed confused, although i was calling like a dying rabbit. He would "flinch" as if to bolt at us, and then stop and stare, then all of the sudden another coyote came out of the trees, and they both proceeded to circle us out of shotgun range. I lost sight of the one, but the other came into a corn field about 80 yards to my right. Downwind. Then as i called he just simply turned and trotted away. He also could obviously see the turkey decoy. Any ideas why? Oh, and by the way, I called in a tom for my friend about 5 minutes later from across about an 80 acre field and we got him, he had a 9 inch bierd, 1/2 inch spurs, and weighed 23 pounds, not bad for a first turkey huh?

nice bird by the way. with the coyote i would have stayed with a yelp. that is a pretty deadly predator call this time of the year. once they circle down wind the show is over. nothing like a dog to get your heart pumping. that would be a good spot to return to in a week or so with a rifle.:)

At 80 yards, the coyote would have no problem smelling you and your friend, that's why he left. Congrats on the turkey!
