i don't see why not. some people will tell you to go with a bigger round which will allow for a "cleaner" kill. but if you know how to shoot those 17's can be accurate at quite some distance, with enough knock down power. good luck

I have a .17 Mach 2 and Ive taken tons of squirrels with it but nothin bigger. I'm sure it would work on a fox or groundhog.

lot of people have killed yotes with 17hmrs. yotes have thicker hides then a fox so just place your shot correctly.

I use a .17 remington which is far more powerful than a .17 hmr. You are talking about 4200 fps vs. 2200 fps. I would say that using a .17 hmr for fox is somewhat marginal. I have had them run off using a .22 mag which is a much heavier bullet. Yes, it will kill them if hit them. But a poor hit is going to mean a fox that may not be found. I compare it using a .223 for deer. Yes, it is going to kill them if you hit the in the vitals or in the head but a bullet that hits outside of that area may not do the job quick enough. If you hunt at night you want something that is going to kill them on the spot. It is hell to blood trail a fox a night. A 22 hornet is another good round for fox. It gets a bad rap for not being a accurate round but I have found that the Browing Micro hunter with hornady factory ammo is one accurate rifle. Same hole groups at 100 yards.

i use a 17 hmr for coyote and fox. i dont think its too small for either. i would however limit your shots to 100 yds. with the vmax bullets at 2550 itll do a better job than a 22mag and with much less pelt damage than a 22 centerfire. although after a 100 yds your gonna want a 223, 22-250, etc. ive found the bullets go in and pretty much explode, they dont exit. killing quick and leaving only one small entrance hole. plus guns are cheap
