Eat yotes????
 

As I said in an earlier post, Im goin yote huntin this Saturday with a group a friends, and today one of them said that they are gonna skin one and cook him. Have you ever ate a yote? What should I expect it to taste like? Is there any part of him thats "the best", I doubt theres anything on a yote that would be good, but what would be the best on a yote?

A few years back, I came across a book that listed pretty much every huntable animal in North America. It listed the habitats, habits, a bunch of other stuff, and how they fared on the table. Been searching for it for a couple years now. Wish I could remember the name.[:@]

I have eaten a lot of game ,bobcat ,beaver, coon, opsiom and muskrat.I have never eaten yote I would in a have to case for sure.I will not go hunt them to eat though.I have allso eaten many typs of birds that people would never think :}

Some times when money is tight food is food. Trapping can give big numbers of game if you just tosed all it would be a big wast.

I now live a little diffrant life :} no more trapped critterto eat.

BTW bobcat was the best out of the list.

Some Southeast Asian cultures eat dogs -- I'd think the taste is similar. Most people don't eat yotes because of the similarity to our pets. Others think that eating a scavenger is gross. If it's cooked in a real good recipe, I'd try it. If I liked it, I'd eat more. But on my own, I'll skin them and toss the carcasses.

Did you ever smell one?!?!?!? I have and I dont think I could eat one based on the smel alone. On the other hand, black bear is terrific and lots of people wont touch it.

I once talked to an old feller who had eaten just about everything. I can't remember what he said about Yote's, but he said the worst thing he had ever eaten was Opossum. He said it tasted like trash.

if i was realy hungry i would do what i had to do to servive but i dont think i would eat a coyote if i have good food in the fridge. let use know how it tast good luck on your hunt.

other country eat dogs so i might not be that bad
u go first and when i am about dead from starvation i may try it

OPOSSUM is very soft meat. kinda like spam. allso has a slime coat just like spam allso.mmmmmmmSpam opossum. they are very much alike. Should we check for opossum bones in the dumster at the spam plant?

It did have a very bad tast. But it is eazy to trap and kill.

I GOT IT, maby we should send them over seas to feed the needy! woohoo opossum has its place now.

When I was living in Nevada, a local family invited my roomie and I over for dinner. When we got there, they had made something that looked like pork chop, though while eating it, it tasted more like chicken. I didn't want to be rude, so I kept my mouth shut. The next day, we were informed that they had butchered and cooked up one of their many dogs.[:'(] Hence, it was by accident.[:-]

Not sure what book you are referring to but I have one that comes close to what you described. "complete Fish and Game cookbook" by A.D. Livingston. It has all recipes for all kinds of animals such as skunk, bobcat, cougar, coon, possum plus all the "normal" table fare. No mention of yotes or foxes. The one my boy shot today stunk. I'd have to be pretty hungry to eat a canine.

There must be a big difference between the taste of a coyote and a domestic dog, simply due to their different diets. A coyote eats whatever it can, including rotten meat. Even though domestic dogs will eat rotten meat if given the chance, most get their fill on Iams and Kibble 'n' Bits.
If I had my choice between the two and if I was starving to death, I'd have to pass on the coyote!

I heard that possum can be good if you trap them and feed them nothing but cornmeal and water for about 2 weeks, and get them away from their scavenger diet. I'll try to go back and find where I learned that. But I can see where it could work if it is legal to do that in your area.

Ks_Sniper - I have a book from 1972 that is an Outdoor Life book called the "Complete Outdoor Encyclopedia." It talks about the range, food, and edibility of a lot of different game animals, plus a lot of other info.

They really fed you their dog? I admit sometimes I'm not straightforward (okay I'm deceptive) in feeding venison instead of beef, but wow, that's just a little over the edge.

Like the send-it-overseas argument for the 'possum; I'd have to decline 'possum pie. But I'll to tell you that BBQ raccoon is delicious! I'm serious, it really is tasty. And I'm up for eating kitty-cats if you're talking about mtn lion. But fox or coyote I just don't know about.
Why is it that I seem to be having this discussion on a regular basis? LOL "Kill it and grill it' seems to take on a very strange, peculiar, and almost scary meaning!

dude, whoever thought that one up has too much free time. youre gonna catch a nasty ol possum, build him a cage, feed and water it like its a hamster, change his litter, then eat it two weeks later?

with all the time and energy invested in that, you'd be better off raking leaves or shoveling snow for 2 weeks then taking the cash and buying a side of beef!

i'm only teasin. struck me as funny when i read it.

I'm not sure if I could work myself up to trying it. My dad was in Vietnam and used to tell the story about the night he and his CO were invited to dinner at a village head-man's house. After they began the meal they realized that the main course was dog. Since food of any type was at a premium for the villagers it would have been incredibly offensive to refuse to eat, so they just gritted their teeth and dug in. He said that, once he got past the thought of chowing down on his old bird dog back home, it wasn't bad at all.

A friend and I went to Arizona a few years ago to get away from the ND cold. We called in a few coyotes. The carcass was hanging from the tree. I said that looks like pretty good meat. I cut a big chunk off the back thigh and fried it over the camp fire. It tasted like they smell. TERRIBLE.

I too have eaten dog mistakenly. I was on a tour bus in Manila, in the phillipines and a street vender was selling sandwichs. I purchased one and ate roughly half of it and tried to ask a local what I was eating,btw didnt taste too bad but different. He didnt speak english well at all and finally got his point across by simply barking like a dog. He finished the sandwich for me after that.

I have eaten a lot of animals but a yote I wouldnt even think of trying, i"ve heard that buzzards wont even eat them.
Let me tell you this, my mom was born in the '20s and was raised on a farm, they were poor but not starving poor. Anyway, when she was here (bless her soul) she could cook up anything i threw on the cutting board, and I did just that, opossums was one. As a kid I would kill these things in the woods near my house along with rabbits and squirrels, I would bring them home and she would skin, clean , and cook everything I brought her, and the opossum was good eating. Armadillo is also excellent. But I havent had a opossum since way back when she would cook them, that was in the 70's and 80's. I killed one a while back but couldnt even bring myself to clean it. LOL but I do remember it was good eating.

I cant imagine that eating a coyote would be any different than eating a dog, and Lewis and Clark and their group of men LOVED dog. The book Undaunted Courage said that they would rather eat dog as anything.
