best .22 for the money
I have been using my 12 guage on squirrels and wanted to switch to a .22.
I have a good rimfire scope I can mount on the rifle. I wanted recommendations for the best rifle for the money. I have a tight budget and can't afford to spend too much. Thanks |
RE: best .22 for the money
any of the $100 22s at walmart should work fine for you but i think the ruger 10/22 is the best one for the money. i seen one at walmart last night for $166. and the bass pro shop has a bbl and sinthetic stock both for a little over $100. then you would have a very nice 22 rifle.

RE: best .22 for the money
The best cheap .22 is the Ruger 10/22, but I would personally spend a bit more and get the bolt action Ruger 77/22. Mine has shot every round I have put through it very well with the exception of the stingers. I can shoot 1/2 groups at 50 yards, and at 25 yards I can put 10 rounds through a hole you can cover up with a dime. I would recomend the 77/22 to anyone. They are about $400 though.
Good luck. |
RE: best .22 for the money
get the 10/22. had mine for about 20 years now and maybe had 2 misfires ever and that was with cheap ammo when i was younger and didnt know any better. i use the rem hollow points that walmart sells in the 550 count and they are more accurate than i am;). i always talk about getting a heavy barrel and a better trigger but i honestly dont think i could get better than the 1/2" @ 50 yards that i get now with a Bushnell 4x scope.

RE: best .22 for the money
The Rugers are great guns but I opted for a Marlin when I bought my .22lr. I have a Marlin 7000 which is a semi automatic. I just recently got it but I have taken it out to the range and on a few squirrel hunts and I love it. It has a heavy target barrel without any sights so it is ment to be scoped. If you dont know what a heavy target barrel is, just think of it as another tool for great accuracy. There is also the model 980V which is identical to the 7000 only its a bolt action. Both guns run around $150 and are well worth it.
Heres a link to the Marlin Firearms page: http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/index.php I bought mine at Walmart. If they do not have them in stock you can have them special order it for you for no extra charge. Hope this helps, Chris |

RE: best .22 for the money
i have a remington 597 it was 130 bucks i have killed many birds, squirrels and raccoons with this gun. It is very accurate as 1 squirrel found out when i took him in the head at 75 yards. The only set back i have noticed is the clip dosent like to hold ten rounds it jams up for some reason.. so i only put 5 in the clip. But i have another clip but i have to find it cause there is a crack in the first one but i dont know anyways there good guns and cheap. Also i second the Remington .22LR Golden Bullets that sell in the 550 they are cheap about 8-9 bucks on sales and they shoot nicely the hollow point makes great holes in animals for clean kills Cya

I also have a Remington 597 but up here in MA in cost me $180. I have a bushnell 4x scope on it. I like it, but as mud said the clip dont like to hold ten rounds. The gun is pretty nice, I have never shot an animal with it, but it works well at the range.

RE: best .22 for the money
I've gotta opt for the Winchester 9422 lever action... I've had mine for 20 years now and it has been a faithful companion... it shoots most brands of ammo acceptably well, holds 15 LR in the tube... has a grooved receiver for scope mounting, side eject so you can mount a scope low... have no idea what they may be costing now as I've had no need to look...

RE: best .22 for the money
Thanks for all the responses.
Problem is (and I definitely should have mentioned this when I posted, but I only just did the research) most of the weapons listed are semi-auto, which is illegal in my state. Also, does anyone know why semi auto .22s seem to be the cheapest models? Doesn't make sense to me. |
RE: best .22 for the money
I mentioned the Marlin 980V. It is a bolt action rifle, and a great one at that. The bolts are usually a bit more expensive beacause they are usually more accurate them a semi, and because the bolt itself and the mechanics behind it are more pricey than what makes up a semi. Heres a link to the specs on the 980V. . .
If you do decide on this rifle, im sure you wont be dissapointed by it. Chris |

RE: best .22 for the money
You didn't specify if you wanted an inexpensive gun or a good quality one.
If you want inexpensive get a Marlin or Savage. If you want to spend a little more then get a Ruger 77/22. If you want top of the line Cooper or Kimber. I have a Browning A-Bolt .22 and love it. Too bad they don't offer it anymore. |
RE: best .22 for the money
oops!, Sorry I missed the part about you being on a budget.
Get a Marlin! The micro-groove rifling they use is great for .22's |
