Using a light when calling
Greetings,
When calling dogs at night what type of light do you folks reccommend? I have heard about using a red lense and have also heard that a plain white light is fine. Also, does moving the light around to scan for the animal spook them? Do you keep the light on constantly? It seems odd to me that canines are not spooked by a moving light. Is a miners (head) light better than a hand held? Thanks, Steve (New York) |
RE: Using a light when calling
When calling, you really need two lights. You need one that is just bright enough to pick up the eyeshine of the coyote. A lens filter (red, blue, or amber) seems to help dim the light a little. I keep this light on constantly and shine around constantly. If you are spookiing them with the light, then you are using a light that is too bright. Then I use a bright light to shine when I'm ready to shoot. That allows me to make a positive target idendtification and make a good shot.
Some people like headlamps, some like scope mounts, but I just use regular handhelds. |
