pelt saving loads
I have a 243 and a 22-250. I want to sew as little as possible. I'm hunting mostly yotes, foxes and bobcats. I live in NM and can't use full metal jackets. Someone suggested a v-max in the 243. I shot into a stack of papers and had a three inch hole coming out. Don't think that will work. What are my options. My wife would rather I not add to my gun collection but I'm not totally against the idea.;)
Appreciate any ideas. shot high |
RE: pelt saving loads
do you have to use a rifle? how about a shotgun? theres no bobcats or coyotes here in england but shooting foxes with a shotgun is quite easy at times.

RE: pelt saving loads
last coon i sold in tne new york fur sale we could not have more than 3 holes i think it was, or the price would be very low, so shotgun might not be so good. go to the winchester web site they have a thing their to find loads.

RE: pelt saving loads
I was reading "Bill's Coyote Hunting Site," and he said he only takes forward-facing chest shots to save on pelt damage.

RE: pelt saving loads
Thanks for the input. Shotgun Mike I do take my shotgun at times but some places I go to long shots are required. I'm not as good a caller as I should be <G>.
Front on chest shots sounds like a good idea. I should have thought of that. thanks SH |
RE: pelt saving loads
i would use the 22-250 with slow moving soft points. never had any luck with the v maxes. to many "splash" wounds. or you could go the other way and push Berger 50 MEF's as fast as you can. either bullet will work well with the bobcat and yotes but the do do some damage to a fox on broadsize shots
i have tired a 243 and the horandy 243 win 75 gr. hollow points worked well with coyotes but will do nasty things to a bobcat or fox. i.e. last year while hunting yotes i called in a fox and decided to shoot it. 70 yard shot. the bullet hit dead center in his neck went out on his back left hip and let me tell you it wasn't pretty. it's intestings where hanging from trees 7 ft. in the air. couldn't even take the hide that was left. as far as a new gun i have had great luck with the 221 fireball and the 17 Mach IV |
