.22 on Yote?
I wanted to know if my .22(not a pellet) its a rimfire, would kill a yote?
There is so many of them over here where i live... theres like no rabbits over here now because of the damn coyotes... so will my .22 kill a yote with in about 300 feet? or maybe even 70, i dunno...??? please help! |
RE: .22 on Yote?
it should, if youre a good shot. i've killed them before with my .22 LR.

RE: .22 on Yote?
I have to disagree. I have killed many coyotes with many different guns and loads.I have killed coyotes with a .22 LR,but at no more than 40 to 50 yards. You would be extremely lucky to kill a coyote and 100 yds.

RE: .22 on Yote?
You can do it, do I recommend it? NO. Your better off with a shotgun than with a 22. You will fare better if you buy a 223 or even a 243 deer rifle will do the job just fine. I love to hunt coyotes, they are the toughest game to hunt in America. Don't take a chance at wounding an animal. Do the right thing and make sure you KILL it.

RE: .22 on Yote?
are you saying a shotgun is bad for coyotes (i mean at close ranges)?
|
RE: .22 on Yote?
Yes its POSSIBLE to kill a yote with a .22 at that range with a REAL good aim. For coyotes i use a Winchester .270

RE: .22 on Yote?
Greets,
If your looking to just get rid of some why not use your deer rifle?? if you want good sellable pelts then you going to have to ask these guys what is best and get it, but just for the hunting a good deer cartridge will knock em dead. ( for the record, IF I can get a 'yotte I plan to learn how to tann the pelt, my wife wants them. ) |
RE: .22 on Yote?
Everywhere that I hunt for rabbits and such there are also so many yotes that I can't hardly find a rabbit. So, if I see a coyote while Im hunting rabbits with my .22, I will shoot at it, as long as I think its within the ethical limits of the firearm, say60-70 yards at the max. I saw one one day, about 40 yards maybe less, but didn't have time to get the gun out, had a semi-auto .22 and a bolt action. we had been shooting turtles at a tank and driving back and he just strolled by. was stunned to see him in the middle of the day so I didnt even react.

RE: .22 on Yote?
I dont really think you should. I have shot two now with my .222 and those are some tough animals. I made good shots on both and they went running. I think you should use a centerfire rifle or a shotgun. Just my opinion.

RE: .22 on Yote?
Well...
Thanks for all the help... I think I will try my .22 LF(lake Feild)If i have to i'll use me 44/40, then if i gotta i'll use my shotgun... and if i really gotta i'll use my 30/30... PS: My .22 has a very nice scope on it... i don't think i would miss that much, and if i use my .22 LF should i hit it in the head? |
RE: .22 on Yote?
If you want to save the yotes pelts use the .22 but if you just want to get them of the land use your deer rifle it will be alot more reliable, or just blow them away with a 12 gauge or somethng

RE: .22 on Yote?
If you're gonna use a .22lr, use the CCI "Stinger" bullet. Works really well, with a well placed shot to the head or soft spot behing the front shoulder. I'd be under 50 yards and ready for a quick follow up shot.
Get a .22Win Mag. Much better for 'yotes. |

RE: .22 on Yote?
well went out to hunt them... i seen 2 of them... but they where about 100 yards away so i didn't take the shot... theres bobcats over here now... so one of these days i'ma get my shotgun and just shoot at them... f'n things!

RE: .22 on Yote?
What kind of shotgun and with what shot are you planning to use on the cats? You'd have to get closer than i would like to get to hit and kill them with a shotgun. If i were you, i would use your 30/30, but thats just me.

RE: .22 on Yote?
I do not recommend trying to take yotes with a .22lr, it's not ethical. The lr is just too small, and too slow. maybe a mag would be alright, but I'd go with a centerfire over the lr or any rimfire for that matter. That said, I've shot about a dozen yotes with .22lr, out to no more than 100 yrds, but that was when I was young and dumb, and didn't know any better. You could do it for sure at 70 feet, but I wouldn't try to push it past 200 feet. A good way to test if you can take any game with any rifle, is to attempt to hit the ten ring of a handgun target at your hunting distance. If you get the ten ring almost every shot, then I'd say your gun is at least accurate enough to do the job. THen look at your balistic charts, check out what type of energy your bullets have at those distances. I'd say you should have at least 500 ft.lbs. upon impact to kill a coyote. Don't try it unless you're sure that you can at least expect a clean kill with the first shot everytime. If you can only hope to wound an animal, and you go ahead and shoot it, then the animal will suffer, either starve to death from being maimed by a poor shot, or to bleed to death, either of which being a terrible way to die. If you want to hunt coyotes, invest a dime, or several thousand dimes, and buy a high power rifle. If you want a good, simple, cheap, only yote/varmint rifle, go to wally world, you can pick up a .243, or .223 in a Savage bolt action model 110 or 111, with a 4x scope, for around $250-$300. It's as accurate as you'll ever need, and it's powerfull enough to get the job done right.
Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!! |
RE: .22 on Yote?
Ok, whoops, my other post says you'll need 500 ft.lbs. to kill a yote. That should be at least 50, not at least 500, sorry, just over looked it while typing.

RE: .22 on Yote?

RE: .22 on Yote?
Why don't you find some super-light .30 cal bullets and handload some in your .30-30?? It would do REALLY well, since they'd be moving so fast they'd be really accurate (minus winddrift). Even a 30 grn bullet will kill a yote, it's just that a .22lr can't hit them hard enough with it, or accurately enough to get a clean kill. If you could find some 55 grain hollow points in .30 cal (I've only seen them once, loaded for .30-06. They'd leave a .30-06 at well over 4000 fps, and that's on a light powder charge too. You could get awesome velocities out of your .30-30 with something that light, and therefore your energy would be huge at 100 yrds, and they'd hit where you want them too. Whatever you do, good luck, especially if you try to use your LR.
Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!! |
