Squirrel Hunting Tips
This is my first year doing any 'real' squirrel hunting so I figured i'd ask some of you old timers for some tips and tricks. I am hunting in a new area so i'm not to familar with it and I don't really know where to go to find squirrels.
I went Saturday and Wedsnesday and pretty much just picked some random spots and sat down for awhile. Due to the rainy weather we've been having here in PA over the past week and my class schedule I was only able to stay out about an hour to an hour-and-a-half each day. So some kind of tips i'm looking for: 1. How do you hunt? (Do you walk around or sit - is one better than the other based on the weather/time/etc?) 2. Do you use any kind of lures? (I read that if you tap two quarters together it acts as a call - any truth to this?) 3. General tips/tricks you've learned over the years.. 4. Shooting tips perhaps? |
RE: Squirrel Hunting Tips
(I read that if you tap two quarters together it acts as a call - any truth to this?) I just never heard of it. One thing to look for is signs of squirrels. Look on fallen trees or tree stumps or any thing sticking out of the ground above a couple of feet. Look for acorn shells that have been eaten or any thing like peacons or nuts that look Like they were eaten by squirrels. Squirrels have a small attention span so, Walking in the woods and just sitting about 5 to 10 minets at a time will usely do the trick. I carry a small camoed stool its light and you don't get your tail wet. You can get squirrel calls that make other squirrels give away there location. Carry some small rocks in your pocket if a squirrel gos around a tree on the other side You just throw a rock on the side it is on and it will come around to where you are. The rock hitting the ground tricks it into thinking you are on the side it is on and it is trying to get away from you. You can get squirrel calls and stools at Wal-Mart pretty cheap. Also listion you will hear them in the distance some times. And wear camo it helps to, check wih your regulations some places require you to wear hunter orange when hunting squirrels, Its that way in NC. Well any ways Good Luck And Be Safe Always Hunt Safe. Always tell some one where you will be hunting or leave a note telling where you are hunting so if you arent back at night time they will know where you are. Any thing could happen you could get lost or hurt. Carring a cell phone is good to do also, if you are hurt you can get help. And Again Good Luck. jrbsr |
RE: Squirrel Hunting Tips
Thanks for the tips. All of them are very helpful! I saw that little camo'd stool in the Wal-Mart flyer this week for $3.99.. Guess i'll stop out there tonight and pick it up. It was pretty rainy Weds when I went out and my arse got soaked from sitting on a log ;)
I'll be sure to try your techniques next time I go out. Again, thanks for the tips! PS: This is where I found the '50 cent squirrel call': http://www.backwoodsbound.com/tipshunting.html |
RE: Squirrel Hunting Tips
About the two Quarters you dont tap them together you rub them together flat sides between your thumb and index finger it is very close to a squirrel call sound and works for me!

RE: Squirrel Hunting Tips
1dahunter Thanks for explaning that about the two quarters.
I would have never figured that out. |
RE: Squirrel Hunting Tips
If you are hunting fox squirrels if you spot one or one is barking at you use a squirrel distress call they will come right to it.
