Either will work, I prefer the 17 hmr. The cci will do less damage to meat i imagine. You realy should go for a headshot with either sense they will do a good bit of damage. Sense you threw rabbits into the mix id go for a 12 ga or a 20ga shotgun. I have never hunted rabbits where they wernt up and running.

Just get a .22Lr. That's more then enough power for squirrel, rabbit and fox. Plus in Upper Bucks County (the only place to hunt in this county) your not going to really be able to get a shot past 50 yards. Just too thick in this area.

i got the Ruger 77/22 Mag. and i love the thing, but honestly like treedog said go for the head shot with either the MAG or the .17HMR. but i know that a LR aint what you want, cuz well "MORE POWER" (hard to grunt over the internet)lol i hit a squirrel in the neck with the Winchester round when the 77/22 was right out of the box (very accutite out of the box gun), and took it's head and one shoulder off, so they aint a meat saving gun/round if you shoot for the body. i switched to CCI's TNT rounds. they're very accurite, and not as damaging. and trust me they work for rabbit to, i've gott'n a couple that kinda lost their thoughts. you just gotta see 'em before they run, or wait till they stop and then take the head shot. good luck with the desition

.17HMR. It shoots flatter and it does have a fairly diverse range of bullets now with CCI coming out with 20gr hollowpoints as well as Ballistic tip. BSA also makes a scope specifically for the .17HMR bullet drop so as long as you know the distance you will always be able to hit where you aim. Not to mention it is just a lot funner than the .22mag. Heres a site about it, it has tons of charts and test and stuff.

ok ill tell you all about this i read so much on these things .
my vote is the .22 mag b/c
the 22 mag is more of a hard hitting round an shoots just as good as the .17 hmr . Take it like this the .17hmr sucks in the wind really badly , the 22 mag shoots like a dream in the wind . the 17 is so small it just like a needle going threw a animal , the 22 mag is like hitting a animal with a .22 lead that goes alot faster , the 22 mag blows squirels heads off at 50 yards like nohting , yesterday i was shooting tacs with mine at 50 yards . fo with the 22 mag

Buckmastr229, the 17 does not suck in the wind and in fact drifts less in the wind than the 22 mag. Im not here to trash the 22 mag, never have never will. Infact I like the 22 mag, I just like my 17hmr better. Like a needle going through an animal? You obviously dont know what your talking about. You obviously have no experience with the 17, you can learn only so much by reading. When the 17 hmr hits it goes in and BLOWS it up. Now we also get an accurate (not that the 22 mag isnt), faster, hard hitting longer range cartridge with the 17. All those are pluses in my book. Now im not saying the 17 hummer will kill anything the 22 mag wont, but it does have some more range to it. You can even watch impact through your scope. It also appears we may have a descent coyote round for the 17 hmr before long, Hornady is now making a 20gr, The 17HMR XTP. LESS pelt dam. Should be good for anyone not wanting to blow things up.

Everything has trade offs and no one cartridge can do it all; the .17 HMR is no exception. The biggest disadvantage to this cartridge is that it is extremely susceptible to wind. Drift charts indicate that the 17-grain bullet, in a 10 mph cross wind, will drift around three inches at 100 yards and around 15 inches at 200 yards. In a 15-mph gust the bullet will drift 23 inches at 200 yards.

When compared to high velocity centerfire cartridges, this sounds like a lot. However, when compared to it's main competition, the .22WMR, it is a great improvement. At 200 yards the .17 HMR drifts 15 inches less than a .22WMR in a 10-mph cross wind. When speaking of trajectory the .17 MMR also blows the doors off the competition. At 200 yards, it drops 10 inches less than a .22WMR.

Well said TREEDOG, like i said before look at the site, its got tons of graphs and shooting tests on the .17HMR. Also it wouldn't be like a needle going through and animal, the bullet fragments and goes all over hells half acre inside. The .17HMR can also shoot through a bullet proof vest at 45yrds and the .22mag never pierce it at any range that they tested . i can't get the site right now but i'll post it later if you don't believe me
