RE: hog hunting
The ranch I hunt in central Texas just started seeing hogs this past fall, sure one or 2 a year but this last fall we saw groups of them and much more sign around the ranch. So. . . once Deer season ended I started going after the pigs, got 8 this spring. I stopped using my .270 with a scope and switched over to a .357 brush gun. No need for a scope at 15 yards. While not the biggest or best caliber, I got a good deal on the gun and have not had any pigs wander off after being introduced to it.:D

RE: hog hunting
back in missouri I use either my marlin 44 mag rifle with handloads loaded with a Barnes X pistol bullet or my marlin 30-30 with handloads loaded with a 150 grain barnes X bullet or I use 170 grain remington core lokt factory ammo. I even killed a few with a 357 revolver with handloads loaded with a 180 grain Hornady XTP/HP.

RE: hog hunting
I hunt in Red River County, Texas and also in Cass Co., TX and kill several hogs a year. I'm sure we're like Texasaggie in that we're covered up with them and they are a blast to hunt. Good eatin' too. There is nothing finer than jalapino cheese smoked sausage...

RE: hog hunting
I am thinking of my first hog hunt next year but I like to make this a challenge. Anyone ever consider using a .45 cal cap/ball revolver at close range or is that way to under gunned?
Thanks and good hunting. |
RE: hog hunting
use a mini ball with a max charge and you should be ok at close range... 25 yards and under... just need to hold it real fine...

RE: hog hunting
We actually have alot of hogs out here, especially in the area i live and on the coast as well as up north. I didn't know about this until several years ago. The place where i went, which was on a huge huge ranch, was rough hunting which i loved. Another time my dad and I went and the terrain was pretty much flat so it easy to spot hogs, just getting close enough for a shot was hard. I have gotten one so far with my dad's 300 Savage Magnum so that was fun. I want to try to get one with a bow someday. I haven't gone in awhile but i am definetly going to try to hunt for hogs as much as i can. I have yet to get any sort of big game with my bow but hopefully that will change soon.

Got me a good hog. It walked right under my stand. 15 feet BANG one dead hog. |

RE: hog hunting
woofer,
All my pictures are in a shoe box, but when I have a chance I'II figure the way to post them. We have trapped up to 15 a day.My buddy has 2500 acres 2 miles from me.Here in Tampa Fl. it's a big profit. All the Cubans want one to roast for Christmas dinner. $4 a pound and $25 to to Shave and butcher. We have done up to 5 a day.We bought a walk-in cooler from a wrecked refrigerated truck. |

i killed my first this year with a 44 mag. brush gun(win. 94) at 15 yards. the 30-30 works well too. my friend uses one and it does well.
