22-250 vs. 300 ultra mag

I've noticed alot of rabbits, ground hogs and racoons running around my place. Now bare in mind that I have to impress my friends here....wich is going to create the most havoc? 22-250 or 300 ultra mag??? or something else?? I was looking at ballistics for both...but wich one will make a ground hog *explode*?? hehe! Have some friends to impress...any suggestions?

Personally, I never saw the fun in exploding an animal. Dead is dead.

If that impresses your friends, they must be real studs.

BTW...A 300RUM in overkill on a groundhog, and I'm pretty sure coon season isn't in now.

Ummmm, have you ever shot a 300 RUM??? I doubt you would do no more than waste about $5 for every hog killed!! That is WAY too much gun for a 3 lb critter!!! I agree with Pro-Line DEAD IS DEAD. The animal isn't going to know the difference!!

pro-line, I apologize for my arrogance. Sorry to offend. And charlie brown does make a good point about the cost of ammo. But I guess my final question is what is the best 22-250 rifle $650 can buy?

Ahab...Didn't mean to sound snotty. It just looks bad to anti-hunters that lurk on these boards when we talk of blowing animals up.

You can buy a lot of 22-250's for $650. I might look for a used Ruger #1. Problem is that you'll need extra $$$ for a scope.

Maybe a Savage? Or a Rem 700. Whatever you decide, put a great scope on top. Look at the Bushnell Elites. They're rapidly becoming my favorite scope.

Oh...Welcome to the board! It's addicting...[:@]

Pro-line, I understand about the activists...and thanks for the welcoming! Scope shouldn't be a prob. I've got an old Leupold my dad gave me..its kinda scratched up...but the optics are still in good condition. I also have a Bushnell on my Mosin M44..haven't had much luck zeroing in that one, so it might have to come off. Its a sportsman 3-9x32. Sound like a winner? I'll do some homework on the Leupold though, eh?

As for Remington or Savage....that's gonna be a tough decission for me. I've got a Savage 4C-.22 that's probably twice my age...but it shoots great with iron sights! Granted, most 22-250's don't have sights. The accu-trigger does look pretty "friend impressing" though!!

I recently picked up a Savage 22-250 model 12BVSS single shot (with the accu-trigger), topped it off with a Bushnell Elite 4200 8x32 scope. The rifle was a pretty decent price, though I can't remember the amount at the moment. Less than $650 though. The scope and mounts cost about as much as the rifle. I also like, but don't own, the Howa 22-250 with a thumb-hole stock. That's right around $650 where I am.

Took the Savage to the range, and I must be living right because it liked the cheap ammo. Winchester high-velocity 45 grain ammo, box of 40 for $20. After I got it sighted in I put five shots in a 1 inch circle from 100 yards (from the benchrest of course). It didn't like the Winchester softpoints as much. And, while its the first rifle I've had that didn't group well with ballistic silvertips, I'm hoping that was just barrel break-in and bad luck that made those group so poorly.

A .300 for rabbits? This shows you have no skill! Get the 22-250 or the likes and show you have skill!
