I use a .22 mag, if I'm shooting near some out buildings, or if the shots are 100yrds or shorter. But if I want to really put the hurt on them in the feilds, then the old 22-250 is the best medicine in the cabinet. They will never know what hits them.

i killed one with a 22 with hollow points....we were standing there cooking chicken by my friends camp....he kept coming out so i grabbed an orange hat my liscnese and my 22(only gun we had besides pistols and assult rifles)...he came out...crack! shot him like a deer because his head was behind a tree and he seen me.....he died quick.....now that im hunting them this year im using the 3006.....definently over kill.....but i have alot of 3006 i want to burn up and what a good way to practice with the mauser......soon as i get back from vacation im going after them hard.......cant wiat....just use your deer rifle if you have one.....and be careful of where your shooting....

Never had any trouble with regular old 22 LR, but always at short range, less than 50 yds. Also I was not overly concerned with recovering them.

I used my .22 LR for years before upgrading to a 22-250. At 50 yards or less I could consistantly hit them in the head. 40 gr. CCI mini mags and 32 Gr. CCI Stingers work well. Shots in one ear and out the other are the way to go...I always aim for the ear. I could hit them at 75 yards, but with not as much consistancy. Let's just say I prefer the .22-250.

I have never done this but know a guy who is an expert groundhog killer. He uses a 22 Hornet and swares by it. He kills about 10 per year on his farm and has done so for many years.
