That is true. I realize not too many people take pictures of squirrels kills but never hurt to try. The forums have been alittle slow lately, which isn't suprising due to the time of year.

New Crop of Ground Squirrels Out.

They were posing for the camera today, tomorrow they can pose for the 17 HMR. There is a wood pile next to a haystack. If I don't work on this area, they will foul up the hay bales. It is a tough job, but someone has to do it.

Three on top of the wood pile.

Up close and personal.

Wish I had that job. I to love your site, I hit it heavily before purchasing my Marlin 17vs. Keep up the good work. Your squirrels look difrent than ours down here in Oklahoma or am I seeing things?

BHW always has photos :D Are those black squirrels in one of your photos or just the lighting?

TreeDog,

They are California Ground squirrels. The scientific name for them is Spermophilus beecheyi. They dig holes in the ground where they live. I once saw them in an oak tree that had a big hole in it where a branch had broken off, but normally they don't climb trees. In really dry weather, they will strip the bark off of Buckeye trees to get moisture.

More pictures of ground squirrels here: http://www.varmintal.net/avarm.htm

That explains it Al, thanks. I imagine they do a good bit of damage to the fields your way.

This is a really fat CA ground squirrel that lives near my house next to Burger King. I'm working on a plan to cure it's obesity.

I didn't know that squirels were cannibals. I shot this one with my pellet rifle and some other squirrels ate all the flesh off it's arm. I left it there to see it they would continue, and they did.....

Red Hawk 06-15-2004 02:06 AM

RE: Post your squrrel pictures

I didn't know that about being canibals either. I do recall a long time ago i saw another one eating or sniffing at an body of one of its buddy's but it was at a distance so it was hard to tell what it was actually doing.

BHW, appears you take your squirrel hunting very seriously. Great pics!

Jumpshootin, never heard of a tree fiest dog, but is sure appears to do a job on the squirrels. What kind of breed is it?

Jumpshootin 06-17-2004 06:48 AM

RE: Post your squrrel pictures

It's a Feist. He's a UKC registered Treeing Feist. They have been using these little dogs on squirrels in the deep south for many generations. Check out this link: www.sqdog.com or this one: http://www.ukcdogs.com/curfeist/index.shtml

Jumpshootin,

Thanks for the follow up. I have never heard of a Feist. Learn a new thing everyday. Must be a fun way to hunt squirrels!

Tks,

Got this one yesterday with the air rifle. Besides myself and Vamint Al, is there anyone else from California?

chuckflem 06-19-2004 10:37 PM

RE: Post your squrrel pictures

I thought about getting skins form these little guys...some are pretty big. Maybe make a hat or something. I was always afraid they might have rabies or bubonic palague(according to the University of California Management of natural resources website, thanks to Varmint Al for the link). But I guess that's just the ones that die for no reason.

This squirrel took one in the face.

chuckflem 06-19-2004 10:40 PM

RE: Post your squrrel pictures

I wish I could shoot these guys with a real gun. Even with a shot to the neck, or the face like the last one they take a few seconds to die.

Sorry to post the same pic twice but I gotta ask Red Hawk and Varmint Al.....Have you ever seen a squirrel this fat? I thought it might be pregnant....but it almost seems unatural. Have any of the tree squirrel hunters seen anything like this?

Red Hawk 06-20-2004 01:18 PM

RE: Post your squrrel pictures

lol its all good. Yeah actually i have seen one that fat before. An long time ago I shot one and i wasn't sure why it was so fat so i didn't an "autopsy" on it and it was pregnant. I felt kinda bad for shooting an mother-to-be though.

chuckflem 06-21-2004 03:46 PM

RE: Post your squrrel pictures

I haven't seen the fatty in a while so I guess it may have had its litter. I will be moving to the "desert Paradise" 29 Palms CA tomorrow. Since I've never seen any Squirrels up there I probably won't be posting any pictures for a while. At least there will be coyotes and jack rabbbits.....
