coyotes

What is the quickest way to control the population. We have had about 50 calves so far this year and there are way to many coyotes around here. How can you get the most of them killed? Baits, calls, whats quickest?

I would suggest calls. Get a few people together start calling. Hopefully several will come in at once. The Idea is to kill as many as possible to disrupt the the pack.

if your losing that much livestock then you need to get a government trapper(or any experienced trapper) in there to take care of the problem.trapping is the only viable method controling large numbers of coyotes.they have found your livestock(lunch) and they will be back becouse its easy pickins for them.nip the problem in the butt, quickly.

Trapping would probably be the most effective way, but shooting them is lots more fun <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Not to discourage you Brandon...but about 6 years ago when the yotes really moved in on our farm in WV...they actually drove 2 sheep farmers out of business. Good news is that once we started shooting them, the seemed to move on. Haven't seen one in a while.

The guys are right when they said to get a good trapper on your place to get your coyote problem down to an acceptible level. Once he gets the problem under control then an ongoing program of predetor control work should be enforced. Nobody is ever going to kill all the coyotes out of any given area. Not all the coyotes on your land are killing stock. What your after is controlling the population and taking out the problem animals. Once you reduce your coyote population down a bit I think you'll see a definite decrease in your stock predation.

I'm sorry, I didn't make myself too clear. We haven't had that many missing YET. That is how many was born so far this year. We have just seen many coyotes around there and aren't wanting to lose any livestock, so we shoot them on sight at the moment. But, I was just wondering on how to find them without just stumbling upon them sometime. Thanks for all of the information.

We haven't lost any calves to coyotes but the sheep farmers catch it pretty bad on thier lambs . My neighbor lost over 90 head one year . The goverment trapper cleared them out and like probtrapper said it was only a few doing all the damage . Just keep shooting everyone you can .

well if thats the case then do what halcon said just keep shooting them.make life misrable for them every time they crawl under the fence line.coyotes are smart critters and as long as you keep pounding them it won't take them long to relize the your farm is a bad place to be.then if they do discover your live stock then a trapper is the right thing to do.
