Grouse hunting

I'm going grouse hunting w/ a buddy soon and haven't been in a while. I used to shoot Remington AA #8s and am a pretty good shot w/ them on doves. What do you all recommend for gouse?

Here you can't use a rifle, and a 12 goes out further than the others and still isn't much overkill, considering most of the grouse flush out at 40 yds where I hunt 12 ga is pretty nice. Besides I always-almost- hit the head, it makes little difference when you do that...

these ain't your mama's doves your shooting at, these are the real thing. 12 gauge, 3.5," #6's all the way. idaho, either you are a lot better wingshot then most people i know, or you hunt in the open country. here in vt, it's softwoods, brush, hardwoods. sometimes you need to do a bit of logging when trying to hit a bird, lol. that's why you need the 3.5 #6's in a 12. almost forgot, it isn't a grouse, doggone it! you are going out for either a partridge, or just plain bird hunting!

I hunt with my dad here in kentucky and that is all we ever use. Every year in the fall we take a trip to Wisconson just to hunt grouse and we never have a problem with the shells. Grouse hunting is a great sport and very challanging at that. The problem you face is hitting the bird. They are a very easy bird to kill sometimes with only a few pellots. The challanging part is hitting the bird. I know because I've hunted them enough. they get up and out of sight in no time. you must have a very quick shot for where I hunt.
