Best rifle for squirls

I currently have use of a .22lr with scope to use on squirls. Lately there has been a bunch of talk about the .17. Is there that much difference in these two rounds or is it just a bunch of talk.

The 17hmr is a realy accurate round with devasting power on small game, i love it and would choose it over a 22 anyday. The 17 hmr will offer more power at extended ranges, less bullet drop, and it looks cool. For a skilled shooter the 17hmr has enough ump for kills on small game out to 150 yards and nearly no chance of ricochet.;) Savage makes a nice 17hmr for 183$ (wal-mart price). So if your gonna be making long shots, the 17 hmr is for you. However something to consider is that a box of 17hmr ammo will run u around 10$ localy or if you can mail order for around 7.52 a box. The only advantage a 22 has over the 17 is ammo price.

.270 is good on everything from squirrels to black bear LOL just kidding

i like the .17 just because of the longer ranges but alot of squirrels have been killed with a 22 so i dont really matter does it

Nothing wrong with the .22 LR. Been tons of squirrels taken with this round. Just bought a Savage .17 hmr, and sighted it in today. Shoots great. Maybe, in a few days, I can tell you how it does on squirrels!

In my opinion......

The .22 LR in my opinion is the best gun to use on squirrels. With your choice scope's, or iron sights if you like. The .22cal is the cheapest, probably the most fun gun to shoot. A lot of people like the Ruger 10/22 which is all around a great rifle. And I own one and really enjoy plincking with it. But for the best accuracy from a .22 cal. or for that matter any rifle, a bolt action rifle is the most accurate rifle you can own. It's already a proven fact that a semi-auto use's the gas from a fired shell or cartridge to extract the spent case. Where a bolt action will lock in the shell, or cartridge, allowing all the gas to be spent on the bullet. But this is just my .02cents worth, and I know you'll get more information about what people like. Good luck on your choice of rifles.

The good old .22 by far. If not a bow [:-]

I shot a squirrel with an .300 Savage Magnum one time. Slight over kill but it was a good shot considering the distance was more or less 100 yards.[:o][:-]

If you like the 22 ther is no need to change. Yes there is a big difference in these two. The 17 hmr is truley a 100 yard squirrel gun took one last week at 80 yards off hand held between the eyes too him in the nose. At close range it is devastaing I was using the cci 17gr hollow points at at twenty five hards it would take half the head off. Now tommorrow when I go out I will take the 22 just enjoy using something different.
