I'm not sure when I'll get out.

Doves open today in PA

Bocajnala 09-01-2023 04:52 PM

I used to always hunt the opener. Anymore I don't feel like sweating for squirrel. Wait till it cools off a bit

john1984 09-02-2023 07:46 AM

Goose , teal and doves are open . It's gonna be almost 100 degrees this Labor day weekend.

Oldtimr 09-02-2023 11:55 AM

I cannot find a chopped corn field to hunt doves in. Hopefully when the farmers start chopping the temp will be lower.

I killed almost 10 squirrels so far, some blacks , some grays, a red (pine) , couple chipmunks lol , missed a fox. Most of them came from the same tree. Anybody else kill anything yet ? I'm expecting peak colors first weekend in October. Feels great to be out huntin again . Decent acorn crop, shagbark hickory very spotty .

Got one yesterday.

Dropped into a creek. Had to use a long stick to get it out

Hey Jake, are there many hickory and white oaks where you hunt ??? Is it flat terrain or hilly ?

Where I live it's totally flat.

No hickory just oaks. There are hickory just not anywhere I go currently.

My best squirrel woods was about twenty acres of hickory that got logged out about ten years ago. Was always a good place for deer and squirrel.

That's cool. Where I live, I go 10 miles north, no hickory trees whatsoever, and no fox squirrels. I drive 10 miles south I start getting into hickory trees, and that's where I get all my fox squirrel,, . I think I only killed 1 maybe 2 Fox squirrels last year, they are my trophy...,,, Black squirrel used to be rare , but not anymore.

I took a vacation day today , didn't get out into the woods until almost 11am. Surprisingly ended up having a good hunt , 2 grays, 1 black , 1 red (pine) and 2 misses. Looks like a heat wave is coming this weekend :/

john1984 09-28-2023 03:32 PM

Seen Zero squirrels yesterday evening. Killed 3 grays this afternoon and called it quits early. Have only seen One fox squirrel so far this season and missed :(

Bocajnala 09-29-2023 02:34 PM

I hate hunting in hot weather. The humidity and the bugs are just miserable

john1984 09-30-2023 04:55 PM

Went this morning , missed a black one , didn't see much. Bugs haven't been too bad here , big cold front coming in 5 or 6 days allegedly. Made squirrel jambalaya today, copied a recipe from a guy on here, delicious.

Squirrel hunting is getting hard. Shagbark hickory did not produce in my squirrel spots this year except for 2 trees. White oaks produced well in my deer hunting areas but not in my squirrel hunting areas. Bumper Red Oak acorn crop in my squirrel areas. I nailed one yesterday @ 40 yards , my longest shot this year . That was the only one I saw in a 4 hour afternoon hunt .

john1984 10-14-2023 05:44 PM

Well I skipped deer hunting for squirrel hunting this afternoon. Got my first fox squirrel of the season along with 2 greys. One of the greys were the size of a pine squirrel.

Bocajnala 10-23-2023 03:31 PM

Had some morning responsibilities but was able to hit some public land from 1000-1200. Nothing moving at all. But did find some nice oaks and nests.

Maybe can get back there tomorrow by 0900 and catch them moving still.

john1984 10-23-2023 06:15 PM

I got 2 grays yesterday. Took this pic a couple weeks ago. The Rut is starting , I guess I gotta try and arrow a buck, but I'll miss these days

Bocajnala 10-24-2023 09:18 AM

Able to hunt from 9-1030 this morning. Got one fatty

john1984 10-24-2023 02:30 PM

I just had to prove that I can do it with a rifle too lol

My season ends the last day in February. But I have been done for awhile now , for the most part. Probably had my best season ever , number wise , probably killed around 40 bushytails im guessing. The shagbark hickory trees had a poor year in 2023. The white oaks in the forest did well, but the white oaks of the upland hill country did poor. The red oaks did well in the hill country. I'm hoping and expecting the shagbarks produce in Sept 2024.

gamepoki 01-28-2024 07:45 PM

yes. It's very bad
