squirrel hunting nc

I have squirrel hunted a good bit and used bow, pistol, shotgun, and rifle, is a 17 cal good for this?

Good for long range shots...but I still prefer subsonic 22 rimfire ammo, because the muzzle report spooks the squirrels less.
