Today's hunt
Four of us go rabbit hunting every saturday from mid december through the end of february. We kill our share of rabbits, usually jump shooting. We have a dog, but he's more for company than for hunting.
Today we had an exceptional day. We limited (16) in about 4 hours. We had a ball. The weather was nice (about 30) the rabbits were running and the 410's were connecting. I think we only saw 21 altogether. Not that seeing 21 is bad...but that means we only missed 5. LOL |

Pro-Line,
Congratulations! How do you kick them up? I've been with dogs before, but wonder how you can get 'em up without beagles running them out? Edited by - DougMd on 02/04/2002 15:57:31 |

RE: Today's hunt
Doug, when you're without a dog, the key is to go everywhere a dog would! In other words, you gotta get in there in the thick stuff. You've got to kick or step on every good hiding spot, and the thicker the better. The only problem is you better be a quick shot. When you're in the thick stuff, you usually can't see that far.
Most people have better luck kickin' up themselves in fencerows -- more so than on ditch dumps. On fencerows, once you get one up, you can see him run up or back a long ways usually. Hope that helps. We raised beagles and I've probably taken a few thousand rabbits over my lifetime, and have hunted without dogs plenty of times too. It's how I survived in undergraduate school! :) |

SOUNDS LIKE YOU GUYS HAD A GOOD DAY, I HAVEN'T RABBIT HUNTED IN A COUPLE OF YEARS. SURE DO MISS IT.

RE: Today's hunt
We basically try to stay in more open areas when we don't have a dog. Saturday we kicked most of the bunnies out of broke over grass on the edge of a picked corn field. Sounds like there wouldn't be many bunnies there...but we kill a lot like that.

RE: Today's hunt
Sounds like tons of fun! I have only been a handful of times and enjoyed it as much as deer hunting, maybe even more! The most we ever got was 13, but mostly got around 4 or 5. And that's with dogs!
I went to WV to rope off an area for the neighbor to level for a cabin (only trailer there now). We busted up about 20 turkeys, and saw two deer. The neighbor saw the picture of my buddy's buck and said that's just about as big a buck as he's seen there. |
RE: Today's hunt
Doug, maybe next year you will get a bigger one. You gotta figure that there's a relative of him somewhere around there!
