October 2015 - Hunting squirrels with a handgun
Last year, I decided to try squirrel hunting for the first time in years. See, I originally quit hunting squirrels because I didn't find shooting them with a shotgun to be very sporting. No offense to those of you who do use shotguns; it's just not my cup of tea. What changed this time was earlier in the year while helping my grandfather organize his gun safe, I saw that he had a 22 caliber Ruger Mark II topped with a Leupold 4x power handgun scope. When the handgun hunter in me expressed interest in it, he offered to let me borrow it.
While our squirrel season opens near the end of August, I decided to wait until October to start hunting. I wanted to wait until the weather cooled off and the leaves started falling. I ended up getting five squirrels with a handgun that month. In fact, the first one I took was my first ever handgun kill. ![]() ![]() ![]() Can't wait for squirrel season this year. |

I enjoy squirrel hunting with anything, but here's a few that may interest you..... the rest won't upload right now. I regularly use a Taurus tracker, or a Ruger single six. We also have a squirrel hunting contest going on. It's just for fun, no prizes or anything.. At the top of the page if you're interested.

Thanks. I'll have to check that thread out.
Good shooting by the way! |
As I'm sure you already know... the hardest thing about hunting with a pistol or revolver is waiting for the right shot. Once they're in the right spot, it's simple.

Yeah, but, that's where the challenge really comes in.
You know, I quickly learned my lesson on the value of a head shot when it comes to squirrel hunting. I unfortunately hit a few squirrels in the chest that, while they expired quickly, they wound up dying up on a tree limb far beyond any means of reaching them. On the other hand, the ones I hit in the head fell right out of the tree. |
I havent squirrel hunted in a long time, but I used to use my contender super14.

i use my f.arms 252 and i think it's a great way to get out and hone your skills with your handgun and getting some good grub at the same time.the more you handle your guns the more familiar you become with that weapon so great shooting and congrats on your hunt i only wish i was there to shoot some with you !!

Good shooting TNLW. Welcome to the handgun hunting world!!!! I have a Lone Eagle single shot in .22 and is scoped. I dig it out on occasion and pot a few tree rats with it for S&G's. Shoots far better than I ever will. Makes for a fun afternoon.
