Anticipation! Just got a varmint rifle! (22-250)
A couple of gift cards resulted just about enough to walk out of a store with a used, lefty Savage Axis with a Nikon scope and sling. Nothing fancy, but functional, and effectively a gun for free.
Haven't shot it yet, but that will soon change.
Now, tell me all the things I should do with it....

I hand load for three calibers of centerfire rifles that I use (.243, 25-06, and 30-06). All shoot the Hornady Interlocks quite well and I'm sold on them for big game. Last year was my first attempt at prairie dogs out in Wyoming and I loaded their 58 grain VMax for my .243 Sako and had a ball at the longer distances with it. Anything shy of 200 yards I used my 22 Hornet with factory 35 grain Vmaxs and they did a number on those little rascals too!

On these lines, I've thought of a cast and blast that way this fall. Load my camping gear and fishing rods, the 22-250 and some other artillery, maybe my bow, and head for western Kansas.
I also got the very good news that my Brother-in-Law already has reloading dies for the 22-250. He should be able to get me off to a good start in reloading.

Nice acquisition!
Years ago, I had a 22-250 of my own. I could sit there and have five shots touching at 100 yards with factory ammo. It was sold years ago, and to this day it's still the most accurate gun I've ever owned.
I hope yours is just as accurate.

good cartridge, I have one, my only problem with it is I have used the 223 so many years, fired so many rounds my Kentucky windage sux when I have the 250, that and mine is a 14 twist so an 8 twist 223 will shoot farther.

You WILLL LOVE THE .22-250... Its my favorite varmint cal... it just blows them to pieces...
if you are fur hunting.. not the best cal. the foxes I have shot with a .22-250 blows them almost in half.. lol
and I have just a cheap american one.. the axis, american, and x-bolt are all good guns for the price...
the 55 g v-max is prime factory loads for that .22-250

That's my one concern, but it was available and I could get it without much extra cash laid down. We'll see what handloads do. There's published loads that take the velocities down, so that might address it.
One plus is that this gun has a crisp and relatively light trigger for a savage axis (4-5 lbs). I shoot milsurps and am used to triggers that are heavy and creepy, and this one seems like nothing in comparison.
