Talking Winter coyote hunting.

How cold and what wind chill keeps you from going out after coyotes.

We were out in 10 below wind chill Monday with a 20 acre hay field at our backs and a 50 acre corn field to our front.
We did have several big round bales to block the wind a little bit.
We got three from that set.

We have been out when it was a wind chill of 30 below. I believe there is a point when it is hard to get the coyotes to move from a warn bed when the wind is bad even if they are hungry.

that may be but it is a certainty you will not kill one if sitting in your home. even in extreme cold a yote wants to eat, if he hears your call and thinks he's gonna get an easy meal, HE WILL COME.

I've smoked them below -40. If they are hungry, they look for a dinner.

Current conditions don't matter nearly as much to me as how the current conditions compare to the recent trend.

If things are going to get bad, or if things are getting better, then I expect the coyotes to move, so I want to be hunting. For example, if temp and pressure is dropping before a storm moves in, I want to be hunting. If the temps are warming after a long cold snap, I want to be hunting. If the wind dies down after a week or so of gusting, I want to be hunting. If it snowed like crazy yesterday, but isn't today, I want to be hunting. If it rained

Alternatively, if the weather is bad after it had been better, or expects to be better tomorrow, then usually the coyotes aren't moving, so neither am I. For example, if a cold front moved in over the last two days, bringing freezing rain, bitter wind, and snow, and it's still nasty, I'll just stay home until the weather breaks.

If weather stands stable, like a cold front moves in and hangs out for a week, there might not be much action that first day or two, but eventually they gotta get moving to find food, so once it's here, I'm back to hunting.

But, like has been said - you're not going to bag any fur from the couch. If a cold front moved in on friday morning, I'll still be hunting Saturday. But, if something is moving in Wednesday night, I'll cancel all of my meetings for that day so I can hunt the curve before the storm.

If we didn't hunt because of a little wind in Kansas, nobody would ever hunt.

Like NoMercy said; ".....so I want to be hunting...."

The more you are "out there", the lucky you tend to be !!!

No you can't shoot them from your couch (or in front of your computer - LOL)................ !

Talking

Wasn't shot from my couch but was from the front door I shot one. A big male walking down along the creek checking out some of the think growth on the other side. I grab up the swift and as he walked by the corner of the house he went to doggie heaven.

But I had been on the couch watching a foot ball game when I saw him out the window.
