Default Wolf hunting methods. (debating an anti)

What methods are used to legally hunt wolves?
Calling? Baiting? Chasing with dogs?
Specifically, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

An anti-hunter wants wolves back on the endangered list to keep them safe from hunters. They claim hunters are going to animal welfare shelters to get dogs to use as bait for the wolves and/or to persue wolves. If using dogs is not legal now, they have no argument.

Bottom line; (merely an example) If 100 square miles can support 100 wolves and there is now 200 wolves inhabiting the area, what do you do ?

It's called wildlife management, and there is NO group that does more for wildlife management than hunters do = $$$$ (to use an Obama phrase - "period").

Also called putting your money where your mouth is !!!

But but besides the point mentioned above I would point out to this person you are debating how ridiculous it is for he or she to rather see wolves endangered than to have a healthy population just for the gratification of keeping hunters from killing them. The irony here is the fact that most animals killed by hunters are killed much more ethically than the blow mother nature would administer the animal in the wild.

I have never heard of hunters going to shelters to get dogs for bait. One, hunters generally care deeply about animals and their welfare and won't sacrifice dogs to shoot wolves. If any sort of organic bait it will be guts from butchered animals such as a deer hunted in previous weeks etc and not a pet. I believe using dogs for tracking is legal but doesn't sound like an effective way to hunt. Calling is the most effective way and throwing out some bait can help too. Hunting wolves also isn't that easy as they are smart and elusive. Using a dog as bait is 100% illegal but you can use tracking dogs I believe but again you aren't taking random dogs from shelters. A tracking dog is well loved and well trained. The thing about using dogs is as soon as a wolf smells and hears a dog its going to take off and isn't going to climb a tree like a bear. The quotas on the amount of wolves that can be shot is also very limited to keep the amount of wolves to the correct levels for the area. If scientists, wildlife researchers etc decide only 100 wolves should be in a certain area to support a balanced population but their is 150 wolves they will issue tags to lower the population.

If anyone is using "shelter dogs" as wolf bait, they're going to do the same even when wolves are irresponsibly put on the protected species list. Law abiding hunters are just that, and if there really are douchebags that are getting shelter dogs as bait, they aren't the type of people that are law abiding hunters, and aren't going to care much that they're breaking yet one more law after they're put on the list.

Now, with that said, I wouldn't waste good energy debating any anti on this matter. The facts are the facts, but none of these anti-hunters seem to care about facts, so it's wasted breath to spend time humoring them.

Several things:
1---Wolves have been back on the ESA in those 3 states for at least a month
2---A wolf won't run from a dog and any canine in it's area will be dead if they find it because it's considered an intruder in their territory!
3---As was stated by NM448, debating an anti is a waste of time and energy!

I don't argue with anti hunters it is just like arguing the 2nd amendment with liberals. You'll never convince them and they'll never convince you. Everybody just winds up pissed off and convinced that the other person is an idiot.

Most people here in Idaho are trying to call them in...either by howling or prey calling. As far as dogs to hunt them, most hound hunters around here that hunt cougars are quitting, due to the risk of their dogs getting killed by wolves that discover them in their area when they are trying to run a cat. Now cougar population is growing. Wolves will not tolerate other canines in their area, and every year we hear about a hound hunter that lost all his dogs to wolves. Most simply won't risk losing their dogs that they raised and trained from puppies and are part of their family.
I suppose they could stake a dog out and lure wolves in, as long as the dog was being vocal, but what a low life pathetic unethical way to do it...and most hunters out there wouldn't tolerate it and they'd be turned in in short order.
Arguing with a liberal never works, as they are governed by emotion rather than fact. No matter what facts and logic you throw their way, they will only go with how they "feel" about it. They are the people years and years ago that stayed at camp and earned their food from the hunters by mending their things and doing camp chores. Now that we are so advanced and food is readily available, they don't have to do that and can now loudly voice their opinion on how they "feel" about hunting...whether it is bat sh*t crazy or not.
