I really have to laugh at that video. He said the skunk couldn't turn around in that trap and it certainly did as he came in to put the blanket over the trap. Then the video ends with no mention of what the heck you do next, LOL!

I have trapped many a skunk and put a blanket over the trap, then transported the trap wth skunk on a rack to a new location and released the skunk from the trap. Never got sprayed once. The key is to keep them calm, talk to them in a low voice and don't do anything fast. Once calmed down give them a hunk of bologna and open the trap and let them walk. I actually had one try to get back into the trap as I was picking it up.

LOL, as you must serve up good bologna! Of course I already knew that after reading a lot of your posts---just kidding! :p

Hey! My wife once raised a litter of skunk kits in our basement many years ago. When they got old enough I took them out to a place along the RR tracks where there was an area with lots of groundhog dens. I was stuffing them down a hole and they were coming back out as fast as I stuffed them in. I heard a voice say, "hey bud", I turned to lok over my shoulder and saw a railroad worker standing there and he said "you are freaking nuts". Skunks must be provoked into spraying most times.

I use one of those 5x5 foot blue tarps to cover the trap. Took one to the creek and dropped in a deep hole. oil floated to the top and smelled up the area for days.
Since they like honey bees so much I found just opening the cage and shooting them was less smelly.
Before I had the bees I never bothered with them.

:D Al

I've had lots of skunks in the box trap before. Didn't watch this video, but move slow, keep them calm, don't surprise them, no problem. The last couple I haven't even used a blanket

This. I've had to have had over a hundred of them in live traps over the years, never had one spray in the box. I've had a few spray once they were out if I tried to live release them - which was only a reminder that it's a far better idea to just shoot them in the cage. I always transport away from my coon sets to shoot or release any non-target animal.

Now, that's not to say I've never been "skunked". Luckily I haven't in several years, but it happened far more times than I'd like to admit. Dawn dishwashing soap is the trick, and lots of it. First shower makes it almost un-noticeable, but if someone gets real close, or if you got hot and sweaty, you'll pick it up a bit. Second shower the next day and a person won't even be able to smell it on you.

Most "farmers" I knew would drop the skunk and the cage in the nearest creek with a rope tied to it.

Sorry if that offends anyone; but look at my signature !!!

I let my parents borrow a trap once for their chicken coop.... caught a skunk while dad was away and mom had to "take care of it". Turned out to be a pretty humorous story.... :)

Afixiation(sp) is considered humane by most trappers.
They typically drown beaver and muskrat.
If the first shots not a brain shot get ready though using my method lol
Shot one in a ditch once and it fell in there and came back up out charging at me and pap!
Well... Charging might be a little dramatic it waddled at me
But yes has sprayed by this time.
Make the first shot count!
I do relocate possum, I've got a soft spot for the little guys.
Buddy had a baby possum he found in his woodpile and it was just as nice and playful as any puppy.
When I was a kid there was a monster possum who used to eat food with my dog! I'd come home and thy would both be sharing out of the same dish.

I hope your mom didn't get sprayed? :(
Poor lady lol
Hmm, do skunks eat chickens? Never raised chickens myself.

Bocajnala 12-13-2014 01:01 PM

They may. They like the eggs though.
-Jake

Oldtimr 12-13-2014 01:10 PM

Well sonny, west Md, the worst place to shoot a skunk is in the head, there is no doubt they will release their load if head shot. If you want to shoot a skunk, shoot it behind the shoulder and in almost cases it will not spray.

"Farmers" won't tolerate them !!!

glad that works for you, but ive only ever had one spray because i hit it with a .410 and not a .22 like i should have. they normally go limp on a brain shot. sonny.

westMDbowhunter 12-22-2014 06:57 AM

i protect my small crop with box traps every year (do about a half acre) if you snap an ear down and put it in the box its better than losing a few rows worth to the animals. we catch alot of possums, skunks, and coons this way as well as groundhogs and rabbits.
i normally release the rabbits unless its looking really tasty. everything else dies.
never had a problem dispatching skunk in the head, i try not to alert them and with the scoped 22 mag this is easy.
the reason the one sprayed was i was out hunting squirrels and had my montgomery ward .410

my friend used to throw bad eggs at his chickens and they would tear them up! and chicken meat too.

Oldtimr 12-22-2014 06:59 AM

No, you are full of it, just like in all your other posts. Shooting a skunk in the brain will assure it will spray, they can't help it. Not that it really matters but your made up crap trying to be passed off as knowledge is very old and stale.

Oldtimr 12-22-2014 07:56 AM

:lolabove: That explains it, you get your info from youtube. Figures. I am not even convinced you ever hunted or trapped, or that you are not 12 yo.

westMDbowhunter 12-22-2014 08:04 AM

it's called evidence. do you have any?
even though i show four videos proving you wrong, you're still not wrong?
did you even watch the videos? nobody got sprayed once in any of them.

westMDbowhunter 12-22-2014 08:05 AM

sorry i don't take videos of me killing anything or i could show you alot.
sorry i meant teach not show.

Oldtimr 12-22-2014 09:05 AM

Boy, You couldn't teach me squat! Unless I wanted to learn how to be a huge BSer. Judging from what I am seeing with your nonsense again on another thread, I doubt you will be around long enough to to tell too many more tales.
