Coyotes with 40gr vmax 1-8 twist?

Is 40 grain VMAX enough from a 223 with a 1-8 twist.... I know with a 1-8 twist you should have more like a 1-12 twist, but will it still shoot pretty good? And would this load still be good for putting down coyotes?

Thanks!

No problem out to 300 + yards

If you do your part ?

Guys with 204's use 36gr. pills.

I would still do some range work to make sure I was up to the task and find my cut off range.

Try them and see if they group good...that's the main thing to consider is finding the weight bullet that is the most accurate, the 40 Grainers would be enough to put down a Coyote with the speed and the ballistic tip it's going to expand after impact and do some serious internal damage.I have used 32 grain bullets in my CZ .204 that flat put down the Coyotes! As of now I'm using 55 grain Hornady V-max bullets in my Savage .223 Bolt-action!

try them at extended range at targets, the 8 twist might tear them up enough that it smokes them in flight. my 8 twist does well with down to 50 gr, never went any lighter.

If you are a reloader you will want to use a slower load with 40gr bullet. Stabilizing a bullet is launching the bullet with the correct RPM. Since 40gr is a shorter bullet and your twist rate is fast you'll need slower load to get the right RPM for accuracy.

Will a fast load on a short bullet in a fast twist rate be accurate enough? Shoot paper at 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 yards. If it doesn't keyhole in the slightest at any of those ranges and has an ok group then it's probably good enough.

well they will not keyhole, keyholeing is from under stabilizing, you cannot overstabilize a bullet if it has the strength to keep its jacket. may not shoot as well as a heavier bullet that is the optimum weight for that twist.
I also don't believe you can slow it down enough to spin the same speed as it will from a 12 twist and get any kind of performance.
at 3500 fps in a 12 twist the 40 gr spins 210,000 RPM's, with an 8 twist you would have to back the load back to around 2325 fps to get 210,000 RPM's
