I have to disagree there. Used in the right circumstances which I personally would stay 100 yards or less the .17 hmr is a great round. Especially when looking to do minimal damage to the pelt. 22lr I do agree with but I don't feel it's anywhere on the level of the 17hmr. I know I will be using my 17 again this year.

Nobody has mentioned the good old .17 Remington. I used to go out in CO guy that had one and it tipped over song dogs really good. Those little bullets never exited so there was not much damage to the hides. I used a .220 Swift and couldn't say the same thing. The Swift was a little rough on the skins but if the range was over 250 yards, the Swift beat the .17 because it carried its power better and was better in the prairie winds. Between the 2 rifles, at least 200 coyotes went to the big fur shed in the sky.

Having actual experience killing coyotes with .22WMR, .17HMR, and even the lowly .22lr (both out of a Ruger Mark II pistol and Marlin 60 and Ruger 10/22 rifles), as well as a plethora of dogs with centerfire rounds, I'll say this:

1) A .22lr, .17HMR, .22WMR, and I'm sure the .17M2 even can easily kill coyotes. I have done so on multiple occasions over the last 20yrs with all of them except the 17M2. I never did find one before they bailed. Always wanted a Ruger Mark II .17M2 though, I'd love to see a nine shot Ruger SP-101 in .17M2.

2) The fact that it can kill coyotes cleanly doesn't make it a proper coyote rifle cartridge.

If you have one for other uses, knock yourself out, rimfiring for coyotes is a lot of fun to try a few times in a lifetime. Know where your rifle hits and choose your shots incredibly judiciously. Don't expect them to drop dead. Head shots are where it's at.

I've said it a few times this week even: I can drive a nail with a wrench, but that doesn't make it a hammer.

I was going to drop some coin on the Ruger American in a .243 then found out that they offered it in a .22-250 and was at my local Dealer and did a flip-flop after talking with My Calling Partner and opted for the new Winchester .17 WSM rim-fire Rifle....got it on order in the Savage Model and bought 3 boxes of 50 shells in 25 Grains, now I'm waiting on the Rifle to arrive!

Tell us how it shoots when you get it. Nobody here has one so no reports yet.

My brother picked up a new Savage B-mag .17wsm and has already dropped 2 yotes and 2 fox. He loves the rifle. I shot it a few times and it is nice

Admittedly, I am not fur-centric on coyotes; I just kill'em.

Anything that'll kill'em, and which is legal in your jurisdiction (and that is cheap to feed, or that you enjoy shooting) is just the ticket.

.17 HMR will do.

So will an '06.

3 1/2 -inch 12 and 10 gauge turkey loads do the job, too.

My best hunting buddy swears by the .22 Mag.

Other dudes say the .22-250 is the way to go.

Like I say, anything that'll put the whack on'em and which is legal to employ for that purpose where you're at is the way to go.

GTO- I'm not sure what damage it did to the pelts(I didn't see them), but he did say that it piled the yotes up DRT. I did see his target groups at 200yds(1.5"). All I can say is it's a nasty little rimfire!
