Squirrel practice.

Hey guys. I hunted squirrels last year, but this will be my first year with a .22. Our season starts October 18, but the youth season takes place on October 11-13. I am 14 so I can participate in the youth hunt.
I was just wondering, how do you .22 squirrel hunters practice/prepare for squirrel season. What tactics do you use? What equipment do you use? Good luck this season!

I use a Ruger 22 pistol with iron sights. They work fine for the 20 yard shots that I am used to dealing with. It might be a while before you have the marksmanship for hunting with a pistol, but if you don' t have a scope on your 22, don' t worry, regular sights are fine. If it is further away than you can hit, either stalk closer or don' t take the shot.

The other poster was right though, practice while holding your gun the same way you would while hunting. Don' t sit at a table and put your gun on a rest to practice, you won' t have any rests in the field. Practice while sitting, leaning on trees, kneeling, leaning back on something, etc.

Good luck,

Chubber

Do you live in PA plinker? I know that there is a youth season here on Oct 11 & 13 for squirrels.

Well for actuall shooting pratice i usually do this when prating with my bow. Get an 1 liter bottle or milk container, whatever is more or the less the size of a squirrel. set it up in grass (or dirt bankment if shooting gun) at whatever range. Sometimes i putt dirt inside the bottle so it has the same color of an squrriel. Try open sights and scopes. I like shooting squrriels with scope personaly.

maybe try setting up some clay birds in trees and stuff, or have someone set them up for you, then walk through and shoot at them. The shooting shouldn' t scare the squirrels too much even if you do it where you' re going to be hunting. Leftover shotgun shells work good for this too, you can stick them on the end of branches. If they fall down, usually it would be a kill shot but sometimes you just hit the branch...just go check them to see if you hit them or not.

I do the same as the others,I pratice the same way as hunting.I have targets I print off the puter with little spots and circles.I put them up all over where I am going to shoot.I do it leaning against a tree,on one knee, and sitting down.
that way no matter what position your in you can hit the target.

I do have a 4x40 regular rifle scope on my 22.that way my deer rifle has the same scope.with a large scope ,yo can search a limb or through the leaves if you see him trying to hide from you.I only paid $39.00 from walmart for the scope.Well worth the $$$$$.[:-]

one other thing you need to do is pratice ; pratice ; pratice.the price of 22 ammo, you can buy a block and shoot for a while........clean your gun regular....
