fox barkin at me

i could not wait til my new foxpro call came so i decided to take my old johnny stewart call for a set this evening just before dark. i get setup and wait 10 or 15 min. to let things calm down a lil. Im sitting along the fence of a corn field that has thickets on 2 sides. I start the call using a cottontail distress about 5 min. or so i have what sounded like 2 foxes barkin at me. they barked for 20 min or more then it got quiet. so i left figuring it was over. Ive never had this happen before. im fairly new to predator hunting as it has been 15 years the last time. Did they know i was there or what was going on. Has anyone had this happen to them????

I've never heard about fox challenge barking? Surprising...

Whether it was a fox or coyote, ya got busted...

RR

That's been my experience too. Fox are more "singers" with a voice pitched like a chihuahua... Sure would be cool to see a fox set up and challenge though, if it does happen.

you guys are right, it more of a squawk sound rather than bark.. so i got busted now what do i do.. should i go back an how long should i wait??

It was what is called a territorial bark (similar in purpose to a challenge howl by a coyote). Do a google search for fox sounds and you will find it.

Here is an article I wrote in PX about this topic...
