My favorite bolt action rifle is my CZ 527 in .204 Ruger. The next time out I am going to try out my Rem 700 in .243Win that I bought last year. For Semi auto I really like using my ARs in either 5.56/.223 or 6.5 Grendel as well.
Depending on your son's budget I would suggest looking at the Tikka, CZ 550, Rem 700 Sendero, or even a model 7 varmint. I have read good reviews on the Marlin X7/XL7 for budget rifles. No experience with them though. |
Depends on the set-up;
Can only choose one = Remington 700 in .243 Walking, spot & stalk = AR in 5.56/.223 Open country with lite winds = Savage weather warrior in .204 |
I have a savage bvss 22-250. Laminate stock, heaven, SS, fluted barrel. It's heavy, but it's a shooter. It's simply doesn't miss.

270 Weatherby. Cuts them in half, and i can really reach them.

I've got a nice custom 6MM, but my favorite to pack around and shoot coyotes with is my 1885 lowwall winchester in .223. Its nice and compact and very accurate. In this country, more than one shot at anything doesn't happen.

I don't have a dedicated coyote gun...the two I killed this year was with a Browning A Bolt 243...both dropped in their tracks and never moved...

Thanks for for sharing all of your picks it interesting to see what everyone uses.

I run all AR's for coyotes. Custom built on bushmaster receivers, I have a rebarreled and tweaked Varminter 24" heavy barrel and a 16.5" custom Hbar. Both in .223/5.56. Sure, a heavier caliber will anchor them more reliably if you're not a very good shot, but the .223 is plenty for as far as anyone typically will hunt dogs (500+/-). I put up fur, so I'd rather keep my dogs in one piece.
