Is there such thing as too loud???

I was wondering if I can play my caller "too loud." Could it scare off yotes, or do they not care either way?

I think that it is absolutely possible for your caller to scare off yotes if you play it too loud, they know something is up when a rabbit screams like an elephant. You might make sure that your caller isn't distorting if you never have luck when you play it loud.

I think Nomercy hit it on the head, if it's distorting, that's not too good, the sound needs to be natural. The country where I call is very open, so I start all my sets blowing about as loud as I can, may start with a cottontail call first and then go to a louder jackrabbit call, but I blow loud from the get go. I have never seen one run away from me, so as far as I know I haven't "blown one out of the country" so to speak. Just a week ago I back tracked one to its bed, where it was laying when I started calling, and it was only maybe a little over 100yrds. from me when I started calling, which, there is no doubt in my mind that I was very lucky that I didn't bump him before I set up and started calling.I've had a few times that I saw the coyote before calling, and called only loud enough for it to hear me, than once I shot it, then I cranked up my volume, to try and reach other coyotes in the area.

this is an interesting topic,i'm begining to think that volume may depend on where you are calling.here in the east where the blocks of woods and fields are relitivly small,to much volume will deffinetly run them off.i believe its becouse when you go in to call there fairly close.in the wide open expances of the mid west and west volume may not be as critacal.theres no dought though,if i crank my call box or blow a hand call unmuffled(at least on the first call series)nothing is going to responed.of caurse most of the coyotes(and fox) that i chase around are highly educated, this could be a major factor also.but i still believe a caller won't go wrong by starting off at lower volume then if nothing responeds you can crank it up some.

What has worked for me with my mouth blown call is too call softly the first few times just in case there is some predator close by in the area. After that if nothing responds than I call a little louder to reach out where they are. This works for me most of the time. I have heard that calling coyotes full volume may scare them away if they are fairly close to you. You may have to try a few times to find out for yourself.
