Fishy- Check your laws first before you set any traps. For muskrat the #110 or 120 conibear (body gripping traps) Are the most widely use. For beaver I use #4 or bigger leg hold (steel traps) with a drowning set. 220 or 330 coni. can be used for beaver also. In MD. steel traps larger than 5 3/4" when open and coni. larger then 8" when open have to be completely submerged in water. Your laws may be different.

I agree with pesky. 110's are great for muskrats as well as mink and have had some luck using no. 1 1/2 jumps set on floats or by placing them behind the grates on drainage culverts. Check your laws! Michigan just put a bunch of new changes in, including the use of snares! Rats are fun to trap because they're so predictable. find a run in the bottom of a ditch and stake a 110 in the middle of it about every 20 feet or so. I once took 84 in a half mile stretch of one ditch in less than a month, with only twelve traps! Good luck and have fun.

The guys are right when they say to check your local game laws. Here in Calif. they have outlawed the use of leg hold traps entirely. The only brake us a.d.c. trappers get is we can use conibears and snares. I also have had pretty good luck with the colony trap for rats. It`s fast to set(just set it in the run) and come back tomarrow and ther`s a good chance of picking up a half dozen rats at one set. The job is done faster and you know,....time is money.

Shooting muskrat and beaver in Md. is illegal. Besides, you damage the hide. Check your trapping laws. It may be illegal in your state also. It is also dangerous, bullets will ricochet off of water.

For the old muskrat in the water a drowning set it doens't take much but a beaver a lot big like stated in the post before mine check all your laws on large body grip traps in missouri you can't set a 3 30 above the water or withen 200 or so yards of any kind of house 3 30 and 2 20 work good for beaver 1 10 work good on rats and 3 0r 4 coilsprings work good for beaver on drowning sets also
