Default best rifle for rabbit and squirrel

I need a rifle thats accurate right out of the box maybe with a scope I would be shooting mostly from less then 100 yards away maybe 150 yards away at the most. Maybe a .22 cal? I'd prefer a semi auto as I'd hate reloading after every shot. It would have to be under $300 since i just turned 18 and I am berely starting hunting. For now im only going to be hunting Jackrabbits and cottontail rabbit and squirrel. What would be the best rifle and what type of ammo should i use for each kind of animal?

Savage MK II BV in .22 Lr.You'll only be taking such long shots by choice hunting rabbits and squirrels.Vast majority will be within 35 yds or so.

Personally, just for rabbits and squirrels, I'd be looking at a Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22. Slap on a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40mm on top of a Marlin 60 and you're only in it for $150-200. The Ruger 10/22 is a detachable mag, but it's super easy to bump your mag release while carrying over your shoulder and lose your mag in the weeds. The Marlin takes longer to reload each time, but it also holds 16.

Pretty much any bulk packed 22 ammo will suit you. I use Remington Gold Bullet ammo, 550rnds for $20. If you're looking for high quality (high priced) ammo, CCI Velocitors, Mini-Mags, or Stingers are great, and offer a LOT of power out of a little 22lr.

My next recommendation would be a Savage 93 .22mag, again with a Bushnell Banner scope. A Nikon Buckmaster would be a step up, or a Bushnell Elite 3200.

I'd also agree that you probably won't be taking a lot of 100yrd shots on squirrels or rabbits, you'll have a lot within 50, and very few at 100.

Remember one thing. no gun is accurate right out of the box, whatever you buy needs to be shot first and the sights adjusted before taking it to the woods.
Goes double if you install a scope.

rabbit and squirrel... SHOTGUN!! If its under 100 yards then you should whupp em... try a 12 ga. and i dont really find that models make too much of a difference, so just go to a used gun store and try a few to see what you shoulder better

I think the 22lr would be best for rabbit and squirrel as it will not do much damage to the meat and the ammo is very cheap. For what ammo to use most any is good i personally use hyper velocity Remington yellow jackets. As for what gun for under $300, you can not go wrong with a Savage.

My Henry leveraction in 22lr is my favorite for jacks and cottontails. Nice and light to carry, is very accuracte with ironsights, once you get to know it, and is in an affordable price range.
