calling coons
 

anyone done this? any tips?

Not even I have done that....

The only reason I have called coons, which is to say "I have tried it a few times", is that I watched some Verminators videos and they were getting coons to come in with a Syco Tweety call. I've ran hounds for almost 20yrs for coon and I own a couple Syco Tweety's, so I figured why not try it?

I tried to mimic a boar fight (boar coon that is) with the Syco during the early breeding season (late furbearer season). I had a couple come in, a lot more sets that didn't. Had coyotes coming in more often than coons (since it sounded pretty similar to my coyote calling series' on the Syco, I wasn't surprised)).

The biggest problem that I see with calling coons is that coons are much more "strictly nocturnal" than say coyotes or bobcats, so getting them to come out of a hole during the day to investigate a call is a hope and a prayer. Coons also don't cover ground as fast, and won't travel as far for a meal or for curiosity as coyotes would, so you really have to be in the right neighborhood for your set.

I also have a few coon squallers, plus I can squal with my voice alone, that I've used for a long time trying to get coons to come out of hollows while running hounds, and they seem to work well enough too (although I get horse and dry mouthed after 3 sets of calling coons "au naturale").

Good luck to you if you try undertaking it, but personally, I don't recommend it. I'd say find a local guy with some hounds and knock yourself out.
