I agree with the others. Only downside to the 22-250 and depending on bullet choice is pelt damage if your wanting to keep furs.. In that case the 223 maybe.. But I like the 22-250.. I also like a good bolt action.. But good luck with you choice, enjoy hunting them darn things either way..

Just curious, I've read the whole thread and would just like to ask why the .243 was not even mentioned--I have a .204 and it's deadly accurate, but almost too fast if there is such a thing--got to hit the coyotes just right or it just puts a small hole through them--I see it as almost at the edge of too light for coyotes where'as the guy on Preditor Hunt favors the .243 and keeps consistantly knocking them over at considerable distances with it. I've never owned a .243 so what are the advantages of the .223 or .22-250 over it? Just wondering why it wasn't even in the running in this discussion-----

Wasn't part of the discussion because the OP choose between the .204, .22-250 or .223.

I also own a .204 & love it, but feel as you do; so I use my .243 for predators now.

I use the Hornady 75gr V-max, which puts them right down.

The reason I didn't ask about a .243 is that it is so close to calibers I already have. I want to get something a little different. May have to wait for a while now, though, because I just got a .17 HMR. I might be in a little trouble on the homefront if I went ahead and got another gun so quickly.

Love the .17 though...got it on a really good sale plus some gift cards and I have wanted one for a while. It is a Savage Model 93R17 BTVS.
for a typical hunting situation, the 204 has the same trajectory to 300 yards as the 223 with a 35 gr bullet. I'd hafta say 223 since you threw target shooting into the equasion, but I highly reccomend at least a 9 twistRR
What is this?? Sorry but I'm new to the shooting long ranges and such and I was reading this hoping to find the same information.

Thanks, great post.

Ryan.

Not even close. The rifling will make "1" turn in 9 inches.

Default .223

Go with the .223 that's what I use and I never regret it. I'd shy away from that mini 14 though. You may have the luxury of quick shots, but you're gonna sacrifice a little accuracy in trade.

Happy hunting

i would go with a 243.Its a flat shooter and very versitale in that you can hunt squirells and deer with the same gun.
