small game rifle

What's a decent and fairly cheap rifle I can use for small game? I only have a .308 right now

Consistent quality that won't even come close to breaking the bank....Ruger 10/22.

22 long rifle....depending on how small...
maybe a 22-250,222,223
.17 right in between

How about a Remington 597?

A used .22lr, there are plenty of them out there.

For a really cheap, small small game option, then a Marlin Model 60 .22lr. About $125 for the rifle, and 500 rounds for $20. Good for rabbits, squirrels, prairie dogs, etc etc out to about 100yrds.

If you're looking for a little longer range from a centerfire cartridge, then Stevens Model 200 .223rem is a great way to go. Last I looked they were about $300 around here, and a box of hunting quality ammo should run about $17 for 20rnds. My personal recommendation would be to save up a lil extra money and opt for a Savage 12FV for about $550 with the Savage Accu-Trigger... AMAZING shooting rifles...

go to a local pawn shop and pick up an old .22lr. I paid $120 for my Rem 581 and it's plenty accurate and reliable. although not as modular as the 10/22. However, I've heard that the accuracy of the 10/22 is hit and miss. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they aren't all that

bang for the buck id say either marlin 60 or model 25 (i think thats the model, its bolt action version of the 60). If you want something that will reach a little farther id look at a good bolt action in 17mach2 or 17hmr.

Hard to beat a Marlin 60, or if you've got the spare coin, a Marlin 39A.
