Gutting rabbits...

I'm a rabbit nut. After deer season I ususally hunt 2 full days with beagle each week from middle Dec to the end of Feb. The 2 guys I hunt with and myself usually get 100-125r each year. (All with 410's) I thought I'd seen everything...

Today we went and another guy went with us, making 4. After a bit, we jumped and shot a rabbit. I went to put it in my game bag and the new guy asked it I was going to clean it. I said we wait till we're done...and he grabbed the rabbit around the middle, squeezed it and the entrails came out the rabbits anus.

I've heard of people doing this...but thought it was a joke. He did this to each rabbit we killed...and boy were they lighter to carry.

Anybody else do this???

Someone told me the same thing one rabbit hunt and I thought they were crazy, until he showed me. It is kinda cool but it makes it messy on the inside. You end up cracking all the ribs because you start up high and work your way down until....pop. There goes the guts. It is nice for carrying because it does make it lighter.

I wondered if the guts exploded...and they did not. I have tried it before...and the stomach blew up. When this guy did it...it did not.

I think I'll stick with my own method.

THANKS!!!

Saw this in Outdoor Life years ago and tried it. They started with both hands around the rabbit under the front arms and squeezed working towards the butt till the guts were balled up . Then they swung the rabbit between their legs letting there forearms hit their legs and the sudden stop sent the guts flying out the butt. Worked for me but it was also very messy and since you had to cut it open later just seemed like a waste to me. I usually just gut them, twist the head off and pull the skin off as soon as I shoot them (being warm it peels right off). Usually takes a minute and the rabbit is all done.

Yeah...I'm pretty well convinced that broken ribs and possible gut explosion aren't worth the 1 minute it takes to skin one the regular way.
