Coon?
Coon hunting started up yesterday..i dont know anything abot it, but i would like to learn. What kind of ammo is the best for coon? What do you do with it after you kill it? Im not taking that you eat it, so is it sorta like the groundhogs thing? They will also have day hunting coming up..i am very interested in that..whats the techique? Same with night hunting..what kinda dogs are the best?
Thanks |
RE: Coon?
I' m not sure about your situation but I use a .22 Cal.
We hunt at night here and thats all were allowed to legally use after dark. The best dogs for coons are the Black & Tan Hound, they are the best coon dog I have ever seen. |
RE: Coon?
you can call coons in like you would for yotes.go out early in the morning and later in the evening and use a coon call or a rabbit call. at night use the same calls and a spotlight with a blue or red lense.
as for the gun use 22lr or mag, or even the new 17hmr. good luck |
RE: Coon?
that is what we use for them dang coons .22lr [>:]:D:)[8D]

RE: Coon?
Hunter501,
Regarding your question about what to do with the coon after you kill it, their pelts are worth a few beans and believe it or not, I' ve heard of people eating them as well! (Then again, I' ve heard of people eating groundhogs and carp too!) I think I' d chew on the hide before I ate one, myself!!! Jim |
RE: Coon?
If you a huntin around a house and dont want to make alot of noise you could also use short cb caps..... scilent yet deadly when placed in the head. Another thing even with a .22lr you will need to takea head shot...not until you geta .22 mag or bigger should you take a chest shot unless yourr plan is to ht the backbone.

RE: Coon?
i use a 22 and sometimes i bring my 22 pistol just in case i empty my mag and have a fast shot, or in case of snakes, i live in florida where there are lots of cottonmouths.
the pelts are worth $ but I have no idea where you turn em in. -hotgunner |
RE: Coon?
I didnt think they would be good to eat..and eating groundhogs..whats left of them?[:-] and carp [X(]

RE: Coon?
short CB caps..im new to this kinda stuff..can you explain that more?
How loud would those be? and how much do they cost? |
RE: Coon?
a short cb cap is the name of the shell. they are made by cci, they are smaller than a .22lr thrfore thy donnot break the sound berior but they will stil kill a coon if hit in the head. you will find them at our local sporting goods store... here in mn i pay $3.50 for a bow of 100
p.s. if you tell me what kind of gun you have i will tell you how to load them, some guns you have to load them differetly then a .22lr |
RE: Coon?
I' m an avid dog hunter, we sell about 200-250 pelts annually, and usually end up with at least 50-80 that my uncle takes as his share after a night of us all hunting together. Night time is the only time they run basically, so dogs won' t find them during the day (you know, the whole nocturnal thing), I' ve always found day calling to be a waste of time. I use Marlin model 60 .22lr' s in CCI Minimags, they' re great rounds, with them, HCF is wrong, you don' t have to have a head shot. Head shots are the norm, but sometimes can leave your coon up in the tree (die too quickly), chest shots work well with the minimags though, depending if we want them dead when they hit the ground, or just a little fight, heart shots usually give about a 30sec or less fight, sometimes they' re dead before they reach the ground (sometimes hitting the ground does them in too), but I' ve never had a heart shot coon die as he sat in the tree. We' ll sometimes ' leave a little fight in them' to keep the dogs interested, head shots either leave them in the tree, or dead as soon as they reach the ground, so the dogs don' t really get to have as much fun as they' d like. I also use other arms, a Ruger MKII and a Cricket single shot, both for ease of carry, occasionally others, but the marlin mod 60' s have been the best bet for everyone I' ve hunted with.
