Where to hunt?

I want to start small game hunting but when i ask my dad if i can get a pellet gun he always answerss in the same way " Where are you going to shoot it. Our back yard is to small to shoot and ill be hitting the houses. So where can i hunt small game (Squirrel or Rabbit or Birds Maybe) in Illinois. Like i live about an hour south of Chicago and will drive for an hour or two. Also my dad hunts deer and stuff but not in the past 11 years so i never went so i have some help. Also if there is a place what gun should i get. i would like to spend no more than $200 but i can go a little over. Again for the animals i mentioned above. Thanks

Any large woods around you not within a vity/town area, Just get permission from the owners, or if theres public hunting land just go there. And for a pellet gun idk, i havnt used one of them in years. I hardly ever go squirrel hunting anymore.

I wonder why hunter's have such a bad reputation with antis?

I would look into public ground that has trees. If you find trees more than likely there will be squirrels. You probably wont have much competition either.

As for a gun this is what I would recommend, the ammo is fairly cheap and readily available. Walmart should have everything you need.

Lol my walmart has like 4-6 airsoft guns and a red ryder. Wish i wasnt close to Chicago!!!! People have problems with Walmart selling airsoft guns even when theyre clear pistols.

Also what do you mean by public ground? The local park :D Whats the easiet way to find it?

That seems a little weak for rabbits but I could be wrong anyways I'll mostly be squirels but still I'm confused where?

Look online for "Illinois public hunting" and you should find the DNR website. There is state owned land that the public can use for recreation (camp, hunt, fish, hike, etc).

So anywhere I could hunt I could hunt for small game

That really depends on site specific regs. FYI, pellet guns are not specifically allowed for anything except blackbirds and crows causing property damage; I'd call the DNR @ (217) 782-6431 before you spend your money

Understanding that you want to start out small you might also consider taking on the RESPONSIBILITY of obtaining a rimfire rifle. You should be able to get one with the amount of $ that you mentioned and ammo is fairly cheap. The choice is yours(and your fathers) but when you think about the ethical killing power a .22 caliber would be small, easy to shoot, and a little more powerful. This could also lead to hunting slightly larger animals ie. woodchucks, fox, crows. These animals could be taken with a high power air rifle as well, but making clean kills is important too! I wish you the best of luck!!!SAFETY! SAFETY! SAFETY! Welcome to our great sport and cherish it.:sign0016:
