My dad says that you need to till the ground up. I guess coyotes love fresh earth cant keep their feet out of it. Not for sure but I think he used fish as an attractant, and burried his trap in a fine layer of dirt.

There are a lot of different lures out there.

I like lures heavy on skunk as a call lure, Pros Choice and GH-II are my favorites. I use this lure somewhere close to my set but up off the ground. Gets them to come to the area. Place a little on a tree branch or fence post that they can't get to. I'm in SD and I have had a lot of trouble with coyotes wanting to roll in the call type lures when I put them on the ground or actually at the set.

I don't use a lot of dirtholes but when I do I use Powder River Past Bait in the hole.

I mostly use flat sets. Use coyote droppings that I pick up, gland lure and urine. Also use Voo-Doo, Canine Special, Yodel Dog, and Gusto.

All available through the Minnesota trapline link listed above.
