Woo HOOOO! I got my first squirrel!

:D Yes I did! :D

I've been faithfully hunting two spots for the past week and damn it, I've never seen anything! :nonono2:

Today, on my way out, I said to myself, even if I don't see anything, I'll have fun being alone and out in the woods. So I got out of my car and went on the one side of the road in a wooded area and found my rock to sit on. I'd sit and sit and sit, just quietly listening and never seeing anything. So I headed out and walked on the other side of the road towards the river. Same thing but today was different.

I walked in. I'd take a few steps and stop, look and listen. Go a little further, stop, look and listen. I was about 15-20 yards from a small tree and I'm looking at it and see a tail. A TAIL! :D I'm thinking to myself, that's one of them there tree rats! He's :busted: ! I pull my 20 guage up on him. My heart is pounding and POW! I hit him but he didn't fall. I reloaded and hit'em again and he falls to the ground in his death roll but he's not dying. I waited for a few and said a prayer thanking God for this marvelous creature. After a minute, I reloaded, stepped back and gav'em another right in the head.

I don't know if I should have waited his death out but I didn't want to see him suffer and that is why I gave it to him again. Personally, I don't think I was wrong in doing so and didn't want to see him suffer.

On to the pic of my first kill!

He is a she. :D

I can't show you the other side cuz there is no other side! It's a good, clean pic, no goorey stuff here!

Well, I just wanted to share! Thanks to those who have put a lot of time and effort into this site so people like me can share their first kill, talk about it and learn more about hunting.

Oh and I was so excited afterward, the first person I called on my cell phone was my dad! I said, guess what?! He said what and I told him I killed my first squirrel! He started laughing and said I'd never forget that moment for as long as I live and I won't!

I've had a blessed day! :)

root1102 10-21-2009 04:16 PM

now you will be hooked! i shot my first a few weeks back and everyday since then iv been sitting out with my .22 ready!

Ava 10-21-2009 05:03 PM

I think it's a red squirrel. I could be wrong... I know it's a squirrel though! :D

I almost walked right past her too! She was real still on a small tree, not even moving when I saw her. I had to take a double look just to make sure I wasn't seeing things that weren't there because I hadn't seen a squirrel since I've been hunting in that spot.

ETA the tree I shot her out of.

She was about half way up. :fighting0007:

Ava 10-28-2009 04:25 AM

He's still kinda red! :happy0157:

13pointjomc 10-28-2009 06:42 AM

Yeah, fox squirrels are HUGE red lookin squirrels.A red squirrel that is nearly all red,is about half the size of a gray squirrel,i bet they would be fun/frusterating,to hunt with a .22!!!!!

Ava 10-28-2009 06:56 AM

See! I didn't know there was a difference! I just learned somthing today! :cool15:

Thank you!

But really 13... I can't seem to kill a damn squirrel with this 22! WTH makes you think I could hit a smaller one! LMFAO! :D It would be fun though! It would probably take me back to being 12 years old again and stomping the wood floor in discust after missing! :happy0157:

Definately fun though cuz once I see one, my heart starts a pounding in anticipation of filling his ass full of lead! :D

I really enjoy your enthusiasm about shooting your squirrel. It's been 32 years and many, many squirrels ago for me but I remember well. When I was 12 I spotted my 1st and chased it up a hickory tree, then went round and round that tree, and so did the squirrel. I finally got a shot with my Marlin 22 and my squirrel hunting saga began. Get a good, squirrel eye accurate 22 and have fun! I always used a Marlin with open sights and just bought a Ruger 10-22 that shoots just as well. Practice until you can hit them in the eye everytime. I practice shooting twigs off trees or shooting weed stems. Or sometimes I line up empty rounds or acorns on a log and shoot them one at a time. Annie Oakly used to shoot cigarettes out of peoples mouthes. An easy shot for me, but no volunteers to hold the cigarettes!

Get a .17 HMR,then you can pop um at 70 friggin yardz!!!!!!!!!

ilyotehunter 10-28-2009 04:39 PM

i agree you need to practice. make sure when you are shooting at a squirrel you have a good rest

reds10ss 10-28-2009 06:19 PM

thatz awesome congrats on the squirrel! i remeber my first one, long time ago, but i remeber i poped off 3 shells of a 20 ga. the first shot killed him. he was fallin down the tree but i thought he was running!!! so i let him have it!! i was damn happy and proud u would have thought i won a million bucks...congrats again!!

Ava 10-28-2009 06:32 PM

Thanks guys! Every time I think about it, I get a big ass smile on my face! :D

leman 10-31-2009 09:14 AM

Well done!! I wish I could still remember my first squirrel. It's only been 12 years since then, but I just can't seem to remember him. There have been countless others that have stuck in my mind though. You can now look forward to a lifetime of wonderful fall squirrel hunting trips.

bradseabridge 10-31-2009 09:57 AM

I love squirrell hunting, I usually use my Winchester model 61 .22 Mag but where I hunt now that gun has a little to much ass. So I been stickinging with the trusty Marlin .22LR I love squirell hunting.

Thats a mighty fine lookin squirrel you got there.

Ava 10-31-2009 11:20 AM

Thanks! I still get all giddy over that squirrel when I think about it! :D
