Coyote population
We are seeing more and more coyotes in Southhampton Virginia. A buddy of mine told me that he read that if you do not kill 70 % of the population you will have more coyotes then the year before. In other words, to maintain the population you have to kill 70 %. Does that sound right? THey must really reproduce at a fast rate and have marge litters. I am new to coyotes and this year was the first time that I have ever seen one in 16 years of hunting the area.

RE: Coyote population
i don't think its possible to kill 70% of the coyotes in any area.the adult females will have large litters just like any large breed of domestic dog.for 100 years man has tryed to aradicate the coyote, putting a bounty on them, open seasons, poisoning them and a shoot one shoot them all attitude,it didn't work.the coyote will not be alimanated from this planet.i'm not sure what percentage can be harvested but 70% is very high.

RE: Coyote population
Coyotes litter sizes are determined by the carring capasity of the surrounding
habitat. If a area already has the amount of coyotes that that habiat can support the litters will be small maybe only a couple of pups, sometimes in extream condtions she won`t concive at all. On the other hand if the resident population is low,due to desease, heavy trapping, ect. the litters will be quite large with as many as 8 to 12 pups. The only way I see to reduice the coyote population by 70% would be by poisoning. Thats been tried back when preadetor control people could use devices such as coyote getters that used cyinide. Thats all allegel now. Hunting will never wipe out the coyote. |
