4 Shot?
Would 4 shot be effective on a coyote?
I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 Gauge and tons of 4 shot. My Wingmaster has a Full Choke Barrel and I have Some Remington Peters Supermag 4 shot. I was wondering if this would take down a coyote with a good 40-50 yard vital shot? |
RE: 4 Shot?
No sir I don't believe so. I have heard of some guys using #4 buck, not #4 shot. Some claim that is too light and recommend 00 buck. That 50 muzzleloader will sure lay them down though.

RE: 4 Shot?
I'd tend to think #4 would be a little light also. Buck shot would be the cheep way to go, or spend a few bucks and get some dead coyote by heavy shot. In 3.5in. that will put the hurtin on a coyote out to 70yrds.

RE: 4 Shot?
I've blistered a few coyotes with copper plated #4 lead turkey loads while turkey hunting... The only ones I recovered were shot at less than 20 yards...At longer ranges, they ran off..Probably died later, but I did not find them...Due to my admittedly limited experience, I think #4 lead is too light for clean kills on coyotes at any practical hunting ranges...

RE: 4 Shot?
i agree #4 shot is to light. I have shot numerous cyotes with #4 shot while turkey hunting, it is enough to knock them down under 40 yards, but they will just get up and run off.

RE: 4 Shot?
it is not impossible but ya a little light

RE: 4 Shot?
#4 shot is more for ground-hog sized game. It'll toast up a groundhog nicely. But on yotes, like the others have said, it is probably too light, unless it's a very close-range shot.
#4 Buckshot is my personal favorite for a lot of things- I love flattening groundhogs out to 40 yards or so with it. I'm sure it would do the same to a coyote, but unfortunately I've never been able to test that out personally. |
one day while pheasant hunting we were driving around looking for roosters when i noticed a yote. i thought that morning that i should grab my 243 but my hands were full so i brought a 20ga so i could hunt pheasants quick instead of using a big clumsy 12, i had some 2 3/4 #4......17 shots later driving around the section i had my first yote

Your .22 (preferably scoped)will do better taking headshots,(i know,i killed one at about 35 yards with a 10/22 with a headshot)than #4s.I would use 00 buckshot or "Dead Coyote" loads,or if u want a challenge,go after um with ur muzzleloader or ur bow!!!

alot of pepper, no salt no gravy....
I like to use 4buck, those work great and they are fairly inexpensive.... save your #4's for birds....
