About any hand call, enclosed reed style, is a great beginner call that will work. I've got over 100 calls, mostly custom, that I could take anyone of them and call predators. If you don't have any idea of what sounds to make, then you need to find a source to at least hear the sounds that you want to come close to. You don't have to sound exactly like super star joe blow that you see in the videos.
Remingtonguy has a nice summary of what to do. If you don't have a lot of ground to hunt, sit in one spot for 30 minutes and call off and on. If ya got lots and lots of land to hunt, sit and call for 15 minutes and if nothing shows, move to the next spot.

All of you make it sound so easy. I have a hard time believing that people can get coyotes to come in on 50% of their stands. I have been trying a little for the past couple of years and I still haven't seen one come in.

How far away should I make a stand from my truck. We try to get 1/2 mile, but in some places it can be a little tricky.

Try putting your stand in an area where there is cover for rabbits and coyotes with fairly close access to water. They reallylike water ways and ravines. Get upby 4:00 AM or late at night, and see if you can hear them howling. This will give you an idea where their dens may be located. Have you spotted rabbits in a specific area? Is so, chances are you have or will havecoyote activity in that area. A couple of years ago, my dad shot one 30 feet from the house. He has also had them in the back yard. I don't think you need to be 1/2 mile away unless there is a lot of hunting pressure on the coyotes. Also talk to the area farmers and ranchers to see if they have been seeing them or have encountered coyote problems. Ask permission to hunt on their land. Give them your name and number and say you would appreciate a call if they spot one.

Here is a method that can work well on a breezy day, but check you local game laws first. Take a white piece of cloth and weigh it down on one end (can also tie one end to the top of a ground stake). Place this in an area where the color of the ground is not white (a plowed field works well), andthe white clothcan be spotted for a good distance. Now do your calling and see what happens.

I wish I could give you a rock hard answer, but I can't. There are some places that I have to park that far away and walk into while others are only a 100 yards or so. Couple spots I can pull right up to.

I wish that 50% of my stands produced a shot. That would make the contest into a runaway! After this years luck I am thing it is probably closer to 15-20%. IF that.

Its called hunting for a reason. Cant expect to score everytime you go out. The animals we hunt are not dumb. Patience is the key to any good hunter. IMO

I didn't mean to sound mean. I just see the posts on your hunting contest and some of those guys can really call a few in. I know I need to be patient. I have a ton of places to go within 2 hours of driving. I went out Saturday and I could not believe the coyote tracks that were everywhere. They are hanging around where all the rabbit tracks are and where the deer herds are. One of the problems I believe is the fact that a lot of people go shooting their assault weapons out where I go. I try to get away from them. I live in Northern Utah and I am only 30 minutes from Evanston, Wyoming. I have not been there to hunt Coyotes, but I have prarie dogs.

I use 4 different calls right now and I try them at different stands. I even use 2 different ones on the same stand. I have 3 closed and one open reed. My son thinks I do a good job calling. I just need to find more places.
