It is a very capable squirrel hunting caliber and the two guns I have owned were capable of 100 yard head shots with 12 to 16 power scopes.they were a savage and a marlin bolt action guns, both were accurate. As for coyote hunting if you have a centerfire rifle it would be a lot better choice if not then you could kill one with it at close range and a head shot if possible, this subject has been asked a number of times on this forum and usually ends in several pages of yes it will and no it wont.I know it will if everything is right, but one slight misjudgement, calculation,or missed shot placement and you will not retreive that coyote. And trust me it can and will happen,I shot a big male dog last year that ran across the feild 60 yards in front of me thought I had missed him completely with my 223 looked for him and sign, nothing.Went back the next day and found him about twenty yards from where he had entered the feild circled back and got into the woods, good sized hole behind the shoulder, traveled about 175yards on adrenaline and got out of sight,no death spin, and no drop dead in their tracks, struck by a 53gr.softpoint in the lungs at over 3300fps you are using a 17 to 20grn bullet at 2500fps or less at impact to try to do the same thing,if you hunt coyotes with it pick your shots and you may kill some of them with head shots.Good Luck!!

Yes i have used my Marlin for coyotes . To date i have taken 4 yotes , two heart shots and two through the neck and all dropped but one and it did a tail spin ran 20-30 yards and dropped . he was one of the two shot through the heart . All the shot where under 100 yards and i used the 20 grain XTP HP . Been trying for a fox but no luck so far !! Very fun and ACCURATE guns .

Get the Marlin Bolt Action...Model 17 I think. Anyway, clip fed, heavy barrel, wood stock. Very accurate, not bad price. They are lots of fun and so accurate they make you shake your own head in amazement. What you do with it will be up to you.

I've had much better luck with the .22 magnum dropping yotes quickly over the sometime great/sometime iffy (fast kills) tiny bullets of the .17HMR. Another advantage of .22 magnum is you can use FMJ bullets to shoot small game without tearing them up any more than .22LR hv.

I shoot foxes with my Savage 22 mag and it devastates them. I'm sure it would do the same with a coyote. With CCI poly tip V-MAX at 2200 fps it seems to get the job done.

I have a 17hmr but I only use it on squirrels and birds if they are crapping on the cars.

Squirrels the do ok if you hit them in the head. NO RIMFIRES for larger varmints or predators. ull lose more then ull find if you find any.

Yeah I really wasn't thinking of using it for coyotes I just kind of want one and know what it can be used for. I use a 270 WIN on coyotes no worries there ya know lol :)

RE: 17 HMR?

I've got the Marlin .17 with the heavy barrel and can vouch for its accuracy. I think that it is a great gun for going squirrel hunting with the chance that you will get a shot at a coyote. At least i would prefer to use the .17 in that manner as opposed to using a centerfire to hunt squirrels and possibly coyotes. I dont have that much problem with bullet damage on squirrels. If i can hit them in the head, i shoot them in the shoulder and it makes a big hole, but you are only losing some of the ribs which is no big loss anyway.

it is a perfect little squirrel gun alot of people debate on it bein good for yote but it will do just as good a job as a .223

PLEASE share with us HOW the .17 rimfire can "do just as good a job as a .223". I'm REALLY interested how you came to that conclusion.:D

I have shot a few coyotes with a .17hmr all by chance. If I am coyote hunting would muchrather have one of my .223s. If you were in a place with alot of fox it works great on them. But it will kill a yote with a good shot.
