Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
Going to get after some yotes after deer season.I would like some ideas as to what some of y'all use forhunting them. I'm thinking of a .204, .223, or a .243 in a bolt action.Suggestions appreciated.

RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
If your hunting for the furs i think your picks will work but i hunt them just for a hobby and I really dont have need for furs so I use a 270 WIN

RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
I like the .243 because it can pull triple duty by going deer and hog hunting as well.
I know it is not popular, but I like to use the 30-06 loaded with 90gr bullets also......that rifle can pull off quite a few other jobs too. |
RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
for just coyote hunting any of the cals. you mentioned will work fine.I use a ruger m77 markII compact with a luepold 4X12X40 scope the whole rig weighs around seven pounds and is capable of 300yard shots in 223 caliber if you need a double duty caliber then the 243 is best for deer and coyotes without a lot of recoil. My rifle is only 35 3/8 inches long.If you are a big tall person it would feel like a kids rifle but if you walk up hill for a mile packing it,it feels like a dream rifle. And for the normal 200 yard or less shots in ky I think it's perfect for me!!

RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
For caliber I think .204 is a little small for yotes, I know some will disagree but I stick to the mainstay of the .223. It will always be around. As far as gun, can't beat a savage for a bolt action. Acturate as anything out there, great trigger fully adjustable, and inexpensive as it gets. Model is up to you, I shoot a bull barrel cause mine doubles as a praire dog gun, but a buddy has a standard that shoots just as good. Havn't seen one that won't do under a 1/2" at 100 yrds

WARNING: if you EVER go yote shooting with an accurate AR rifle-you'll NEVER use anything else purposely on yotes. It's a BLAST to bust more than 1, or nail them running. The fast followup shots come in handy more times than you would think.

.22-250 Rem, or .243 Win.
.220 Swift Those would be my 3 choices... |
RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
.243 is my choice
|
RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
22-250, might be a lil much, but its a great all around gun

RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
.243 for me. I have a Browning A-bolt .243 hunter model wearing a 4-12 Bushnell Elite 3200 with the lightweight "one-piece" Talley mounts. Don't know what the gun weights but it is definitely easy to carry around. You will walk a lot and the lighter weight is a definite plus. Since most all my shots are within 200 yards I don't see the need for a heavy, bull-barrelled "varmit" rig.
As for the caliber, it was designed to span the bridge between varmit hunting and thin-skinned big game like antalope and deer. In my opinion it does that perfectly. This past week I shot two coyotes (60 and 145 yards) one day and cleanly killed a small buck the next afternoon using Federal 80gr factory loads with the Speer Hot Core pointed soft point. Ammo is reasonably priced (especially compared to the WSSM rounds) and you don't need premium bullets for coyotes. If you reload you can set it up for fast, small bullets for yotes (55-70 gr), heavier bullets for deer (95-105 gr) or a combo load like the Sierra 85 gr HPBT, which I'm toldis an excellent bullet for both and and very accurate. |
RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
.243, 55gr. bullet shoots flatter than .223, and it has more energy.

As well, Savage makes a great rifle for this type of hunting. Its the Savage Mod-10 Predator. Its worth looking into. ;)

RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
220 Swift with at least a 26 inch barrel, that crap about a rem 250 being almost as fast is just that, crap! |
RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
In reply to rem guy1991 I got that at Bass Pro shop in nashville tn for about $30 you buy the stock shell holder and scope cover seperately in all less than $50 buck and better than painting your gun if you decide to sell it.I would advise removing it in the off-season it could gather moisture in a gun safekind of like a pistol holster does and rust your gun, mine hasn't it's made of neoprene and I always oil my gun before I put it back on.

RE: Suggestions for a Coyote Rifle
all of your options are good yote guns but i like the .22-250 or the new .17 rem. fireball hte bullet leaves the muzzle at a blistering 4,000 FPS.
