sounds like barrel twists and size of lead. use a heavier bullet so it isnt affected by the back pressure when it leaves the barrel.

Dryridge and Pedro, I actually shot the 40 g.as well with no luck. He actually sold the gun to someone else already, maybe saving me a few headaches. I am seriously looking at the Remington varmints and the savage model 25 lightweight varminter for a little lighter and easier swinging rig then their typical varmint setups. Thanks for the input all and keep it coming.

As an update to all who advised me here, I took the Ruger out and shot it the other day and was really disappointed, it would not group under 1.25 inches andhad a terrible heavy trigger pull. I used three different boxes of ammo and had the same results with all. I do not blame this on the short barrel but just think that this particular gun is not the shooter I was looking for. At least I got to shoot if first...
This is precisely why I don't buy used guns. Generally people don't sell shooters. The guy that mentioned the trigger may be at fault could be right. I buy only Savage rifles now that I am hooked on their takeup free, clean breaking, adjustable, and safe accutrigger.
