I just go out there with a pellet rifle, with no scope and kill a couple of squirrels. What a challange it is. And what fun! Get some of your friends and go out there and have fun.

ORIGINAL: Korak What I mean by bruising is that when a bullet hits meat traveling at whatever velocity it's carrying energy and that energy is transfered into what it hits.There are way more learned individuals on this site that can give you specifics and calculations I just call it bruising.Tree rats are small(at least in my neck of the woods)and a body shot that's just a little far back will catch a rear leg and there will be bruising.Hitting one in the rib cage is not so bad as there's not a whole lot of meat there but it doesn't take much error with iron sights to make a "bad" hit thus the reason for a scope.My squirrel rig has a Wal-Mart variable scope on it{3x-9x}and high rise scope mount but I'm fixing to change the mounts cause my eyes are not as good as they used to be an I very rarely use the iron sights any longer. I hope I'm helping you and not "confusing" you tree rat hunting is a blast and will challenge your stalking skills and your patience and besides that they taste great. |

Good choice IMO cause I have a Savage Mark II and I just love it as a tree rat rig. |

You can only hunt them without a scope if you can hit them. But a scope does help for long shots.

I always use a scope. Squirrels are not dumb - if they sense any danger they will give you very little to shoot at. A scope also givesyou the ability to reach out adecent distance and"touch" more tree rats.

i have a mil-dot on my .22 savage and i can shoot squirrels and rabbits off my deck at 100 yards with ease i think the longest ive shot with it was a coon at 147 and theres no way i would have made that shot with the open sights

When I was growing up,never knew what a scope was and got PLENTY of squirrels,rabbits,and groundhogs,as well as foxes with THE rifle. It was called THE rifle because we only had 1 rifle as my dad wasn't much on hunting. The rifle was a OLD remington single shot bolt action and I used it for everything from small game,varmits,to plinking. Since then I've become hooked on scopes. Now you'll NEVER find any rifle of mine naked (without scope).If you're young you probably have decent vision so close shots shouldn't present much of a problem.
