RE: .17 HMR for coyotes??

I don' t know about shooting coyotes with the gun because i have never shot one with mine. I have the new england arms single shot. I have shot crows and armadillo' s with mine alone with a couple of coons. The bullet is very fast and flat shooting. I wouldn' t go as far as saying that it isn' t very effictive over 150 yards. That may just depend on the shooter. I have shot armadillo' s out to 125 yards and it was a dead on hit. The armadillo was like jello on the inside after the shot. I will shoot a coyote with mine eventually, but will stick to head or neck shots. Behind the shoulder shot will be effective, but tracking will be almost certain.

If you compare ballistics of a 22mag and a 17 they are about the same ft lbs. but the 22mag dosnt lose energy as fast at longer range. Most gun dealers dont think the 17 will be very popular because the ammo price wont drop until Hornidys patent is up and every one else makes the ammo. Ive talked to 4 people now who have used the 22mag ballistic ammo and say its good.

I would think that the .17 would be to small for a coyote. I would just save up the extra money and get maybe a 22-250 whick i dont own one but heard they are awesome for coyotes or something a little bigger.

Granted, the .17 hmr is small. But, everyone keeps saying " 17 grains worth of bullet" . .17 is the caliber, not the grain wait of the bullet.
