If its dry there like here I would stay close to streams and creeks.
I have only seen one squirrel around my house and it got gone.
So I think where the water is will be where the squirrels will be also.

It has been a long time since i consistently went squirrel hunting at the crack of dawn. Most of mine have been killed between about 8 and 10 AM or an hour or so before dark. The only real advantage to getting out early is that there is less wind.
This time of year i tend to cover a lot of ground and stalk them instead of sitting still. With all the leaves on the trees and brush on the ground, they are less likely to see you.

RE: early season squirrel tactics
here in ky I look to find them in pine and cedar trees during the early season, they eat something on them when the regular nut trees dont have ripe nuts. And as someone else said look for den trees or leave nest, but this is at first light or almost dark deal and you better take a shotgun because the little devils are very fast to leave their home and very fast to get back home,I also shoot a lot of them on the forest floor and around the edge of fields when they are looking for food on the ground.I had almost quit squirrel hunting until my daughter started wanting to go and this got me started back and I remember why I loved it so much, our season starts weekend after next and I'll be out there.HAPPY HUNTING!!
