22-250 or .223
 

Towards late summer im definetly going to buy a rifle. My idea was to get a 22-250 Bolt action rifle. But people are telling me to go with the .223 or the .22 hornet. I really have heard of alot of people having good success with the 22-250. But my question is. If i went with the 22-250 should i get the single shot, or the bolt action. And if you wouldnt go with the 22-250 which gun would u perfer to use.

My Dad has both the 22-250, and the .223 for coyotes. He usually uses the .223, becasue it is much cheaper to shoot than a 22-250 is. The bullets are cheaper. The 22-250 is a little more thump on the coyote, but there still going to die with a .223 why overkill?

Yea that is true. there is really no need for an overkill. But the guns i own right now are - 12 gauge moss, .243 rifle, semi-auto .22 LR, parker magnum crossbow. So the .243 is a little much and very expensive to be wasting bullets on a coyote, and it is way too loud. The .22 LR i think might not have the knock down power of a .223 or 22-250. Now dont get me wrong if you hit him in the right spot. Hes down. Especially with the semi-auto, You can pop the trigger twice before he even knows whats happening. But thanks alot for your advice. i would def like to go the cheaper route. So im going to look into the .223.

Unless you're expecting shots to range past the 300 yard mark, the .223 will do fine.

There is no such thing as "over kill" on coyotes. My rule is, if there is any movement after the shot, I shoot again. I've seen too many well hit coyotes go along ways.

22-250 i have both and it is my go to gun. remington 700 vlsf nice and light. shooting a 55grain sierra blitzking

Personally I wouldn't even consider a .223, only choices would be .22-250 or .220 swift, but I'd take the .22-250.

I prefer the 223, It is my favorite gun, I use it for deer hunting too. But out past 400 yards it doesn't pack enough punch to drop a coyote,but all you have to dois just call them in closer, plus you can shoot prarie dogs all day real cheap.but if you insist on shooting coyotespast 400 yards then go with a something that has a little more whop.

.223 would serve you well in most cases. If you are going to really get into varmint hunting, and want longer range, or plan to reload then you might go with the 22-250. I would figure out how much you can afford for your gun and scope, and plan on 1/2 toward gun and 1/2 or more toward scope, that should narrow your choices and then let personal preference dictate from there.

If I could only have one it would be a 22-250. I own several 223's, along with 22-250's. But as I said, if I could only have one it would be the 22-250.

I definitely hunt more with my 223's, because I like to be able to see impacts. It is easy to see impacts with the 223's. The 22-250 is just a bit much to be able to see impacts.

As others have said the 223 runs out of steam when you get out past 300 or 350 yards. The 22-250 keeps on going past 350 yards.

It is also cheaper to shoot the 223 if you buy factory ammo. If you reload then cost will be very close.

If I were you I would base your decision on what you will be hunting, how far you will be shooting, and whether you reload or not. Tom.

The .243 is perfect for coyote. Little more expensive, and a little louder, but how many do you think you are going to shoot in one day?
